ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Our interns support the investigation of the financial and economic mechanisms of major infrastructure projects or the assessment of the social, economic, and environmental benefits such projects bring to our clients, stakeholders, and society. Help our clients analyze new technology or innovative projects as the financial feasibility and justification of these projects must first be assessed prior to breaking ground. Help our clients find new ways to be efficient in their operations. The primary duties of the intern will be to support building financial, economic, and statistical models using Excel or other analytical software applications as required. Other duties include conducting research to aid in the interpretation and solution of problems with economic relationships. Collecting and compiling data relating to various areas of research. Reviewing and analyzing economic data in order to prepare reports detailing the results of the investigation. Organizing data into report format and preparing graphic illustrations of findings. Working independently on small projects or assisting more senior staff on larger projects.
In the role of Economic Consultant Intern, we'll count on you to:
- Work with the economics team to develop an understanding of industry-leading best practices for economic modeling
- Strengthen data visualization skills through preparation of materials for client presentations
- Collaborate with and learn from experienced economists recognized in their areas of specialization
- Work with your supervisor to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Assess data quality based on primary source
- Gain familiarity with economic techniques such as econometrics, forecasting, and data-driven decision support tools
- Support HDR project managers and staff as needed for quantitative/technical and qualitative settings
- Perform research and write reports that connect quantitative and qualitative ideas and approaches
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program
- Attention to detail
- Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Basic Microsoft Office skills
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be currently enrolled in or have recently completed an undergraduate or graduate economics or business program
- Prefer 2 years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
- Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
- Must possess strong oral and written communication skills
- Must be adept at working within a team environment
- Local candidates preferred

Does a Consulting Analyst internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your school's curriculum includes a practicum, internship credit, or co-op requirement tied to business, management, or economics. Your DSO will review the job description to confirm the work is an integral part of your degree. Roles involving client analysis, research, or project delivery typically qualify, but approval depends on how your specific program defines curricular relevance.
Can I do CPT at a consulting firm before I have an offer letter?
No. CPT authorization is employer-specific and requires a confirmed job offer with a start date, employer name, and job description. Your DSO cannot process CPT without those details. Some firms issue conditional offers pending CPT approval, which is acceptable, but you can't begin working or submit CPT paperwork based on a verbal agreement alone.
How do I find Consulting Analyst roles where employers already understand CPT?
Use Migrate Mate to search openings filtered by employers with active sponsorship history. Firms that have filed Labor Condition Applications or sponsored international employees before are more likely to have HR processes in place for CPT documentation, reducing the back-and-forth with recruiters who aren't familiar with F-1 work authorization.
What happens to my OPT if I complete a full-year CPT as a Consulting Analyst?
Full-time CPT totaling 12 or more months makes you ineligible for OPT after graduation. Part-time CPT, defined as under 20 hours per week, does not count toward that limit regardless of duration. If your Consulting Analyst role is full-time and runs through two semesters, track your cumulative CPT hours carefully with your DSO to protect your post-graduation OPT eligibility.
Does the consulting firm need to file anything with USCIS for my CPT?
No. CPT is authorized entirely by your school through your DSO and reflected on your I-20. The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS, pay government fees, or petition on your behalf. The firm does need to provide a formal offer letter with job title, hours, start date, and work location for your DSO to complete the CPT endorsement on your I-20.
