INTRODUCTION
Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there's one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games.
The Discord Creative Studio Team is seeking a versatile Product Creative designer and illustrator with strong conceptual skills and a knack for working across styles. This role sits within our Product Design org, meaning your work lives inside the app, directly shaping how millions of people experience and express themselves on Discord. Unlike a traditional agency or brand illustration role, you'll be designing within a real product ecosystem: working alongside product designers, animators, and engineers, navigating technical constraints, and contributing to a design system where consistency and craft both matter. You'll be a key player in our expanding Collectibles Content Creation team, someone who can develop a creative vision, collaborate fluidly with other creatives, and provide clear direction to vendors.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What You'll Be Doing
- Design and illustrate a diverse range of Collectibles assets — including avatar decorations, profile effects, nameplates, and profile frames — across a variety of styles: characters, visual effects, objects, and environments.
- Conceptualize, storyboard, and execute illustrations that communicate design concepts clearly within product constraints and user experience goals.
- Design in-app marketing layouts for Shop that feel native to the product and visually consistent with the broader Collectibles aesthetic.
- Partner closely with game publishers and vendors to art direct and deliver high-quality assets, providing clear direction and feedback aligned with Discord's brand guidelines and technical specifications.
- Collaborate with Product Designers, Engineers, and PMMs to ensure creative assets are purposeful, performant, and well-integrated within the product interface.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, owning asset delivery end to end and communicating proactively on timelines and priorities.
- Give and receive constructive feedback in critiques and live reviews, iterating toward the strongest outcome.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
What you should have
- A portfolio demonstrating expressive, high-craft illustration and graphic design work across a range of styles — ideally including work that shipped within a product or established brand ecosystem.
- 2–4 years of design or production experience at an in-house creative team or agency, ideally in tech, gaming, or entertainment.
- Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, with a strong eye for composition, color, typography, and visual hierarchy.
- Experience working within brand guidelines and design systems to produce work that feels native to an established visual identity.
- Experience working with external partners, vendors, or publishers — including providing creative direction, managing feedback loops, and coordinating deliverables.
- Comfort presenting creative concepts and articulating design decisions to cross-functional partners.
- Ability to take feedback, iterate, and deliver production-ready assets that meet both creative and technical requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bonus Points:
- Experience with animation or motion design, and an understanding of how static illustration and design assets translate into motion.
- Proficiency in Figma.

Creative Lead Jobs in San Francisco: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a creative lead job in San Francisco?
Focus on San Francisco's tech companies, agency creative studios, and direct-to-consumer brands, which generate the most creative lead openings in the city. Roles concentrate in SoMa, the Financial District, and the Mission, so targeting employers in those districts narrows your search. A portfolio showing integrated digital campaigns, brand identity work, or product-level creative direction gives you a clear edge over candidates with general design backgrounds in this market.
Which companies hire creative leads in San Francisco?
Employers hiring creative leads in San Francisco right now include Adobe, Highwire, and Meta, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The hiring mix reflects the city's strength in enterprise technology, digital media, and consumer lifestyle brands, many of which maintain in-house creative teams rather than relying entirely on agencies.
Are there remote creative lead jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though it depends on the role. Creative leads overseeing production, photo shoots, or in-studio work tend to require on-site presence, while those focused on digital campaigns, brand strategy, or content direction are more commonly remote-eligible. About 34% of creative lead openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The most remote-friendly positions are typically at tech companies and digital-first brands headquartered in SoMa.
How can I get a creative lead job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Francisco is moving up from a senior designer or art director role at a local agency or mid-size tech company, which commonly promote from within. Boutique creative agencies in the Mission and SoMa hire junior-to-mid talent and tend to advance strong performers faster than large enterprises. Building a portfolio with San Francisco-based brand or campaign work, even from freelance or volunteer projects, signals local market fluency to hiring managers here.
Which industries hire the most creative leads in San Francisco?
The sectors hiring the most creative leads in San Francisco are Technology & Software, Retail, and Electronics & Hardware, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. San Francisco's concentration of technology headquarters, venture-backed startups, and regional offices of national consumer brands drives consistent demand for creative leadership across those sectors throughout the year.
