Design Engineer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a design engineer job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's manufacturing corridor along the Near West Side and industrial suburbs like Schaumburg and Elk Grove Village, where product development and mechanical design roles concentrate. Employers in heavy equipment, building systems, and consumer products hire steadily. A portfolio with CAD work, tolerance analysis, or prototype documentation gives you a clear edge over candidates with credentials alone.
Which companies hire design engineers in Chicago?
Chicago design engineer roles are posted by GFT, AECOM, and Ardmore Roderick and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. The city draws a mix of large industrials, architecture and engineering firms in the Loop, and mid-size product manufacturers in the metro suburbs.
Are there remote design engineer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though it depends heavily on the role. Hands-on design work tied to physical prototyping or lab equipment is almost always on-site, while analytical, CAD-heavy, or documentation-focused positions are more often hybrid. About 64% of design engineer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. Software-integrated design and systems engineering roles tend to have the most flexibility locally.
How can I get a design engineer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is targeting mid-size manufacturers in the metro suburbs, where teams are lean and junior engineers take on real project work quickly. Look for titles like junior design engineer, CAD technician, or product development associate. Chicago's strong community college and university pipeline means co-op and internship alumni from Illinois Tech or UIC often get first-look consideration from local employers.
Which industries hire the most design engineers in Chicago?
The sectors hiring the most design engineers in Chicago are Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Technology & Software, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Chicago's concentration of legacy industrials, architecture and construction firms downtown, and a growing medical device cluster on the North Shore keeps demand across multiple verticals.
