Battery Engineering Intern:
As a Mechanical Design Engineering Intern, you will join the R3 Battery Product Team and support the development of next-generation battery energy storage products. You will work alongside experienced engineers on real product development activities ranging from concept design through manufacturing.
What You Will Do
- Support the design and development of battery pack components, modules, and assemblies.
- Create and modify 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
- Assist with prototype builds, module builds, testing, and validation activities.
- Perform tolerance stack-up studies and support design for manufacturability (DFM) improvements.
- Design and build simple engineering fixtures for development and manufacturing.
- Work with manufacturing, quality, electrical, and mechanical engineering teams to solve technical challenges.
- Support documentation including drawings, test reports, and engineering change activities.
- Own a defined engineering project and deliver measurable results during the internship.
What You Will Learn
- Battery pack development from concept through manufacturing.
- Mechanical design best practices, GD&T, DFM, and DFA principles.
- Product validation, reliability testing, and root-cause analysis.
- Cross-functional product development in a fast-paced engineering environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with 3D CAD software.
- Ability to read and create engineering drawings.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Comfortable working in a hands-on lab and prototype environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Solid understanding of mechanics of materials and heat transfer fundamentals.
- Ability to perform first-order (1D) engineering analysis without relying solely on simulation software.
- Familiarity with GD&T, tolerance analysis, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience taking a design from concept or napkin sketch through CAD and CNC-ready drawings.
- Experience designing, building, or testing physical products through coursework, personal projects, or internships.
- Exposure to battery systems, renewable energy products, or power electronics.
