Electrical Design Technician Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical design technician in Hawaii?
Most candidates enter through an associate degree in electrical technology or electronics from a school such as Honolulu Community College, which offers accredited programs aligned with Hawaii industry needs. While Hawaii does not issue a state license specifically for electrical design technicians, those working on projects requiring stamped drawings must work under a Hawaii-licensed Professional Engineer. Building a portfolio of AutoCAD drafts and earning an NCCER or ETA certification strengthens candidacy considerably.
How much do electrical design technicians make in Hawaii?
Electrical design technicians in Hawaii earn a median of about $96,200 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,280 for the lowest 10% to over $120,270 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical design technicians in Hawaii?
Hawaii electrical design technician roles are posted by M.C. Dean, Brown and Caldwell, and Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Defense and federal infrastructure work on Oahu drives much of the consistent demand, so employers with DoD or utilities contracts tend to hire most frequently.
Which Hawaii cities have the most electrical design technician jobs?
Honolulu, Hilo, and Maui account for the most electrical design technician openings in Hawaii. Honolulu leads because it is home to the largest share of federal facilities, commercial construction, and Hawaiian Electric's main operations, while Pearl City and Kapolei have grown as secondary hubs tied to defense installations and planned infrastructure projects on Oahu's West Side.
Are there remote electrical design technician jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, but they're rare. About 22% of electrical design technician openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how site-dependent most of the work is. The tasks most likely to be performed remotely are CAD drafting, load calculations, and design review, while field coordination and installation verification typically require physical presence.
How can I get hired as a electrical design technician in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an apprenticeship or helper role with a Hawaii electrical contractor or a large federal project contractor such as Hensel Phelps or Nan Inc., both of which staff multi-year island construction programs. Honolulu Community College graduates can also apply to Hawaiian Electric's technical trainee pipeline. Coming in as a CAD drafter or construction document technician and building schematic skills on the job is a common lateral move that eventually leads to a full design technician title.
Where can I find and apply to electrical design technician jobs in Hawaii?
You can find and apply to electrical design technician jobs in Hawaii on Migrate Mate, which lists current Hawaii openings. Search for roles that fit your experience level and location preference, then apply directly to the ones that match.
