Candidates with a background managing cross-functional or distributed engineering teams stand out here. Networking through local tech meetups and tapping connections at Boston's research hospital systems and university-affiliated startups gives you a concrete edge over purely online applications.
Which companies hire engineering managers in Boston?

Boston's market is particularly active across large biotech and medtech firms, defense primes, and the growing cluster of enterprise SaaS companies that have established engineering hubs in the Seaport and Fort Point neighborhoods.
Are there remote engineering manager jobs in Boston?
Yes, though remote availability is moderate for engineering managers since the role typically involves hands-on team oversight and stakeholder meetings. About 34% of engineering manager openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements being far more common than fully remote. Platform and cloud-infrastructure roles at Boston's SaaS companies tend to offer the most scheduling flexibility.
How can I get a engineering manager job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic path in Boston is moving from a senior individual-contributor role into a team lead or technical lead position, particularly at one of the city's many mid-size SaaS or medtech startups that promote from within. Boston's dense concentration of Series B and Series C companies in the Seaport and Kendall Square area regularly elevates strong senior engineers into first-time management roles, making those companies a practical first target.
