Environmental Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental technician in New York?
Most employers in New York require at least an associate degree in environmental science, environmental technology, or a closely related field, with a bachelor's degree preferred for consulting and state agency roles. New York does not issue a single state license for environmental technicians, but HAZWOPER certification through an OSHA-authorized trainer is effectively required for remediation work, and many positions tied to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation expect familiarity with DEC permitting and reporting standards.
How much do environmental technicians make in New York?
Environmental technicians in New York earn a median of about $62,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $43,540 for the lowest 10% to over $92,900 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire environmental technicians in New York?
Employers hiring environmental technicians in New York right now include Alliance Technical, LaBella Associates, and Syracuse University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large Superfund site inventory and active DEC oversight program mean consulting firms with statewide remediation contracts are among the most consistent hirers.
Which New York cities have the most environmental technician jobs?
New York, Syracuse, and Albany have the most environmental technician openings in New York. New York City drives volume through its concentration of environmental consulting headquarters and large infrastructure projects, while Albany anchors state agency hiring at the DEC and related offices, and Buffalo supports demand through ongoing Great Lakes remediation work and industrial compliance activity in the western part of the state.
Are there remote environmental technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 33% of environmental technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most field, sampling, and site monitoring duties. The portions of the role most likely to allow remote work are data entry, regulatory report writing, and GIS mapping tasks that can be completed off-site.
How can I get hired as a environmental technician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or seasonal field technician role with a New York State agency or mid-size environmental consulting firm, where structured exposure to DEC-regulated sites is built into the position. AECOM and Arcadis both run associate-level programs that accept recent graduates from programs at SUNY schools such as ESF and Stony Brook. Earning a HAZWOPER certification before applying and building GIS or data logging skills from adjacent roles in laboratory science or geotechnical work will give candidates a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to environmental technician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to environmental technician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly.
