Executive Director Of Development Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a executive director of development in Texas?
The path to an executive director of development role in Texas typically starts with a bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, communications, or business, followed by progressive experience in development or fundraising. Texas does not require a state-issued license for this role, but earning the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential through CFRE International is widely recognized by Texas employers and signals professional credibility. Most candidates advance through development coordinator or major gifts officer positions before reaching the director level.
How much do executive director of developments make in Texas?
Executive director of developments in Texas earn a median of about $60,320 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $39,730 for the lowest 10% to over $95,770 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire executive director of developments in Texas?
Employers hiring executive director of developments in Texas right now include ECS Limited, DLP Capital, and Hyatt, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large nonprofit sector, major research universities, and prominent healthcare systems consistently maintain active development teams and recruit experienced fundraising leaders throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most executive director of development jobs?
Austin, San Antonio, and Carrollton have the most executive director of development openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas lead because of their dense concentrations of nonprofit organizations, major hospital systems, and flagship university campuses, while Austin's rapid institutional and philanthropic growth has made it a fast-rising market for senior fundraising leadership.
Are there remote executive director of development jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since the role relies heavily on in-person donor cultivation and relationship-building. About 33% of executive director of development openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with those arrangements most often found in national nonprofits headquartered elsewhere that manage Texas donor portfolios. Grant writing and strategy work tends to be the most remote-compatible part of the position.
How can I get hired as a executive director of development in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a development coordinator or annual fund assistant at a Texas university, hospital, or mid-size nonprofit, then building toward major gifts responsibility. Institutions like the University of Texas System, Texas A&M Foundation, and large United Way chapters across Houston and Dallas regularly hire entry-level development staff and promote from within. Earning the CFRE credential early and building a portfolio of successful grant applications or donor campaigns meaningfully strengthens candidacy for leadership roles over time.
