Gis Analyst Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a gis analyst in Texas?
Most Texas employers require a bachelor's degree in geography, GIS, urban planning, or a related spatial science. Texas does not issue a state-specific GIS license, but employers broadly recognize the GIS Professional certification from the GIS Certification Institute as the professional credential that sets candidates apart. Building a portfolio of geodatabase and spatial analysis projects, gaining Esri technical certifications, and applying to entry-level analyst or GIS technician roles with state agencies or engineering firms is the standard Texas hiring path.
How much do gis analysts make in Texas?
Gis analysts in Texas earn a median of about $47,680 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $36,120 for the lowest 10% to over $77,200 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire gis analysts in Texas?
Employers hiring gis analysts in Texas right now include CONSOR Engineers, Permian Resources, and GSI Environmental, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of state agencies, oil and gas operators, and large municipalities makes it one of the more diverse markets for GIS work in the country.
Which Texas cities have the most gis analyst jobs?
Houston and Midland have the most gis analyst openings in Texas. Houston's energy and utility sector drives heavy demand for pipeline and infrastructure GIS work, Austin's rapid growth fuels openings in city planning and transportation agencies, and Dallas-Fort Worth's mix of large municipalities, engineering consultancies, and regional transportation authorities sustains consistent hiring across the metroplex.
Are there remote gis analyst jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most technical fields, since gis analyst work is largely desk-based and output-driven. About 0% of gis analyst openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the role can be performed through cloud-hosted data platforms and remote desktop environments. Geodatabase management, data processing, and web mapping configuration are the tasks most commonly performed fully remotely.
How can I get hired as a gis analyst in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a GIS technician or spatial data technician role, which Texas state agencies such as TxDOT and the Texas Water Development Board, as well as municipal GIS departments in Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, post regularly for candidates without extensive experience. Building a public portfolio of ArcGIS Online maps and completing Esri's entry-level technical training significantly strengthens an application. Adjacent roles in surveying, urban planning assistance, or environmental data entry can also serve as lateral entry points into a GIS analyst career.
Where can I find and apply to gis analyst jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to gis analyst jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers actively hiring right now. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
