Position and Salary

The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 2 in the Social & Health Services Division. This position is located in Seattle, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). Paralegal 2 (Range 55) salary range: $61,644 - $82,872 annually (Effective 7/1/2025) | $62,880 - $84,528 (Effective 7/1/2026)

The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:

• Note: Effective July 1, 2025, Paralegal 2s assigned to work within King County receive Group C Assignment Pay in addition to their base pay. The Group C pay percentage received at this classification is a limited premium and applies at the Paralegal 2 classification.
  • King County Paralegal 2s – 5% Group C Assignment Pay
• Incumbents assigned to our Seattle office location receive an additional 5% King County Location Pay stipend.
• Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend.

About the Seattle Social & Health Services Division

The Social & Health Services Division provides legal support to the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). Our division handles a variety of work including child abuse, neglect, and termination of parental rights proceedings; vulnerable adult protection and guardianship proceedings; foster care, child-care, and adult family home administrative proceedings; and appeals involving all of these cases.

This is fast-paced, high-volume litigation. It requires excellent communication and time-management skills, as well as the ability to juggle competing priorities, think on your feet, and work effectively with a variety of people. Experience with litigation case-preparation and a commitment to child advocacy are preferred. Duties and Essential Functions of a Paralegal 2 supervisor

We are looking for dynamic leaders or those willing to become a dynamic leader for a team of paralegals. The Paralegal 2 supervisor positions are vital to our Social and Health Services Division team. These positions serve as the primary legal and administrative support to multiple Assistant Attorneys General, they supervise a team of paralegal 1s and are members of the division's management team. They work as part of a team of attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants.

Duties include:

• Supervisory: Supervises, trains, and coaches legal support staff in the performance of all duties; assists in the prioritization of work and monitors performance; assists in hiring and disciplinary process; approves leave, schedule requests and timekeeping for assigned team; enhances employee effectiveness through timely appraisal and professional development opportunities.

• Legal support: Perform complex paralegal duties at the expert level such as identifying and pursuing next steps in litigation or adjudication process; initiate draft and prepare correspondence, pleadings, briefs, memos, and reports for attorney's review; check and verify legal citations, references and quotations for accuracy; apply knowledge of proper use of grammar and spelling to proofread and edit legal documents; schedule meetings, conference calls, depositions, court hearings and other administrative proceedings for attorneys; keep attorneys' calendars up to date and attorneys apprised of upcoming deadlines.

• Management team: Coordinate with the Administrative Office Manager and other division managers to plan, lead and organize the work performed by office staff. Assist in drafting new office procedures and updates to office manuals. Attends regular and special management meetings and participates in division business planning.

Qualifications

Combination of four years of experience* through:

• Paralegal certification
• Two-year paralegal degree
• Paralegal plus (or nine-month paralegal, post BA) certification, and/or
• Paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney

OR

• One year experience as a Paralegal 1 in Washington State Service.

You may have gained applicable paraprofessional experience through previous Paralegal or Legal Assistant work.

Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney:

• Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence
• Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents
• Calculating, verifying, and calendaring critical events and other dates
• Managing case documents, files and exhibits
• Tracking and organizing discovery documents
• Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy

The most successful candidate will have:

Familiarity with Juvenile abuse/neglect litigation, family law, or elder abuse/neglect cases is desirable. The successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively on a team or independently; ability to manage a heavy and diverse workload and manage the stress that accompanies that; knowledge of court rules and effective use of related databases and software; effectively organize electronic and hard copy records; and must communicate effectively. The successful candidate must be able to adapt to rapidly changing needs and priorities. There will be exposure to materials that may be highly offensive regarding sexual, physical, and psychological abuse and neglect of children and vulnerable adults.
