Finance Director Jobs in Boston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a finance director job in Boston?
Focus your search on Boston's dominant hiring sectors: healthcare systems anchored in Longwood, asset managers and banks in the Financial District, biotech firms in Kendall Square and the Seaport, and universities across the city. Employers in these sectors consistently look for candidates with CPA credentials, experience closing complex multi-entity audits, and familiarity with fund accounting or grant reporting, depending on the industry.
Which companies hire finance directors in Boston?
Employers hiring finance directors in Boston right now include Fidelity Investments, Argenx, and AscendX, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Boston's mix of large academic medical centers, global asset managers, and venture-backed life sciences companies means the employer landscape is unusually broad for a city of its size.
Are there remote finance director jobs in Boston?
Yes, though finance director roles are less remote-friendly than individual-contributor finance positions because the role typically involves in-person board reporting, auditor coordination, and leadership oversight. About 31% of finance director openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common at technology and professional services firms in the Seaport and Back Bay.
How can I get a finance director job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving up through a controller or senior manager of finance role at a Boston-area nonprofit, community hospital, or mid-size biotech, where lean finance teams give high-visibility exposure to board reporting and audit oversight earlier than at larger institutions. Boston's concentration of teaching hospitals, community health centers, and early-stage life sciences companies regularly promotes from within when candidates demonstrate ownership over the full financial close cycle.
Which industries hire the most finance directors in Boston?
Most finance director openings in Boston sit in Education, Investment & Asset Management, and Insurance, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Boston's role as a hub for academic medicine, institutional asset management, and life sciences R&D drives consistent demand for finance leadership with sector-specific expertise in areas like clinical trial accounting, fund administration, or sponsored research compliance.
