About the Team
DoorDash Labs is an independent team within DoorDash. We explore robotics and automation to transform last mile logistics in the long term. If you have a passion for applying robotics solutions in a service used by millions of people, then we want to talk to you!
About the Role
We are hiring a Firmware Validation & Integration Engineer for our autonomy software team. This is a critical role to build robust and scalable validation for our firmware and systems to ensure reliability at every level. In this role, you will work with our electrical, firmware, and autonomy engineers to build the infrastructure and test suites required to validate the system. This includes designing and implementing our Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation environments and automation frameworks from the ground up. You will report to the Autonomy Platform Lead on our Autonomy Platform Team at DoorDash Labs. We expect this role to be hybrid with some time in-office and some time remote.
You're excited about this opportunity because you will…
- Play an integral role on a small and focused team.
- Design and build Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems to simulate vehicle dynamics and sensor data for comprehensive firmware and system-level validation.
- Develop automated test infrastructure and software tools to exercise multiple embedded platforms throughout our robot system.
- Interface many layers of our control system including vehicle controls, power management, and motion control to ensure seamless system integration.
- Implement low-level test sequences and validation algorithms to safely stress-test vehicle components such as batteries, drive-train, and thermal management devices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify edge cases and hardware-software corner cases that impact vehicle safety and performance.
We're excited about you because…
- BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field.
- 5+ years of experience in validation, integration, or HIL development for robotics, autonomous vehicles, or other complex mechatronics systems.
- Proven experience designing and building HIL environments (e.g., using Speedgoat, dSPACE, NI, or custom-built Python/Linux-based racks).
- Experience with embedded source code for performing low-level troubleshooting and validation of system peripherals.
- Python and C++ experience for building test automation frameworks and software-based simulators.
- Solid understanding of digital electronics, buses (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN), and embedded peripherals for hardware-level troubleshooting.
- Knowledge and comfort working with hardware electrical systems for reading board schematics, bring-up, troubleshooting, and system validation.
- Working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow for modeling and simulation.
- Comfortable using source control and build automation tools like Git, Jenkins, etc.
- Bonus: You have experience collaborating in multi-disciplinary teams spanning software, controls, and hardware, and can communicate technical details across domains effectively.

Firmware Engineer Jobs in San Francisco: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a firmware engineer job in San Francisco?
Focus your search on San Francisco's hardware and deep-tech startup ecosystem, particularly in SoMa, Dogpatch, and the adjacent East Bay corridors. Employers here hire most actively for embedded systems, IoT devices, and consumer electronics. Candidates who show hands-on experience with real-time operating systems and can demonstrate shipped products stand out in a market that values execution over credentials alone.
Which companies hire firmware engineers in San Francisco?
Employers hiring firmware engineers in San Francisco right now include OpenAI, DoorDash, and Skild AI, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The local market is anchored by hardware startups, medical device firms, and consumer electronics companies that maintain engineering offices in the city rather than the broader Bay Area suburbs.
Are there remote firmware engineer jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though firmware engineering is less remote-friendly than most software roles because the work often requires physical access to hardware, lab equipment, and test benches. About 44% of firmware engineer openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to cover architecture, code review, and documentation rather than hands-on bring-up or board debugging.
How can I get a firmware engineer job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Francisco is targeting hardware startups in SoMa and Dogpatch that hire junior engineers willing to work across the full stack from day one. Contract roles at consumer electronics firms and internship-to-hire programs at IoT companies offer strong footholds. Building a portfolio of personal embedded projects and contributing to open-source firmware repositories gives local hiring managers something concrete to evaluate.
Which industries hire the most firmware engineers in San Francisco?
San Francisco firmware engineer roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Energy, and Manufacturing, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. San Francisco's density of venture-backed hardware startups and its proximity to semiconductor design firms drives sustained demand across those sectors, particularly for engineers who can work from silicon bring-up through production release.
