The Hearing Representative position is an in-house fully remote position that may handle a designated caseload of Workers’ Compensation cases and appearances before the California Workers' Compensation Boards in Marina Del Rey, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Van Nuys, and Oxnard.
This position will be part of a collaborative learning environment with onsite appearances in partnership with our Attorney and Senior Attorney Staff. Responsibilities:
- Analyze legal and factual issues, conduct extensive and develop well-reasoned legal research.
- Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients.
- Prepare pleadings, depositions, panel requests, and briefs in support of defense strategies with autonomy.
- Partner with our Claims Partners to achieve the best results for our Hartford insured.
- Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients on legal and factual issues within the scope of representation.
- Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion.
- Facilitate prompt, efficient, and effective disposition of assigned cases.
- Handle a varied case inventory with full defense and lien files.
- Negotiate and resolve cases/lien on behalf of The Hartford.
- Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials, judicial/administrative hearings, arbitrations and alternative dispute resolutions.
- Interpret and analyze medical reports or bills/invoices and provide disability ratings and/or other Official Medical Fee Schedules where jurisdictionally applicable.
- Provide recommendations and case analysis to business partners and clients on appropriate file handling strategy.
- Integrate legal support staff into case handling process when appropriate.
- Adhere to all standards of excellence in file management.
- Meet annual billable hour expectations.
- Attend continuing legal education seminars to maintain a high level of professional expertise.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree or law degree preferred. Legal Studies degree preferred.
- Strong understanding of California Workers’ Compensation law and litigation procedures.
- Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, Workers’ Compensation case handling preferred.
- Persuasive legal writing and oral advocacy skills.
- Strong evaluation and negotiation skills.
- Trial experience is preferred.
- Positive minded and collaborative team-player attitude.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
- Lexis Nexis experience is a plus!
- Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required.

This position is a remote work opportunity however, our selected candidate may travel 1-5 days per week (as per court requirements) within the following geography: Los Angeles, Long Beach, Marina Del Rey, Van Nuys and Oxnard, California. Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$81,200 - $121,800
