JOB SUMMARY
The Histology Technician II is responsible for preparing tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs specimen collection, accessioning and logging routines.
- Assists pathologists with tissue grossing procedures.
- Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides.
- Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures such as oiling and cleaning microtomes according to schedule, recording temperatures on various instruments, changing the processor according to procedure, and changing staining solutions.
- Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers.
- Observes hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, and prepared work area.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Graduate Certificate Histology preferred
Experience
Clinical or Histology experience 1-2 years required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation, decalcifications, processing, embedding, routine and special stains and frozen sections.
- Must be able to perform certain special stains (i.e. Oil Red O).
- Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
- Participates in relevant continuing education programs.
