Tips for Your Histology Technician Job Search
List certifications prominently on your resume
Your HT or HTL certification from ASCP should appear near the top of your resume, not buried in a footer. Many histology technician postings filter applicants by certification status before a human ever reads the document.
Tailor your resume to the staining methods listed
Job postings name specific techniques like immunohistochemistry, special stains, or frozen sections. Mirror that language exactly in your resume bullets so your application clears keyword screening and reads as a direct match to the role.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists histology technician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings that name your equipment experience
Employers treat tissue processor and automated stainer experience as a practical filter. If you have hands-on time with Leica, Sakura, or Thermo Fisher equipment, name the models in your resume to match what hiring managers are scanning for.
Prepare a case-volume answer before every interview
Interviewers almost always ask about your daily case volume and turnaround expectations. Rehearse a specific answer that reflects your actual throughput, because vague responses signal limited bench experience to a pathology department hiring manager.
Negotiate shift differential during the offer stage
Many histology roles involve evening, overnight, or on-call coverage, and shift differentials vary widely between employers. Ask about differential rates and on-call expectations before accepting, since these directly affect your total compensation.
Histology Technician Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most histology technicians?
The companies hiring the most histology technicians right now include Clinical Laboratories of Hawaii, LLP, CommonSpirit Health, and Northwell Health, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Illinois, and Massachusetts, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Academic medical centers and large reference laboratory networks tend to post the highest volume of openings on a rolling basis.
How many histology technician jobs are remote?
About 0% of histology technician openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most bench roles. Digital pathology review, quality assurance documentation, and training or education positions within histology departments are the sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid schedules.
How do you become a histology technician?
To become a histology technician, complete an accredited histotechnology program at the certificate or associate degree level, which includes coursework in anatomy, microtomy, and tissue processing alongside supervised clinical hours. After graduating, sit for the ASCP Histotechnician exam to earn your HT credential. Most entry-level positions require that credential before your first day on the bench.
How do you get hired as a histology technician with little experience?
Candidates with limited experience typically get hired by completing a clinical rotation that gives them documented bench hours, then applying to new-grad or training-track postings at hospital labs and large reference networks. Emphasizing your ASCP certification, rotational exposure to specific staining techniques, and any coursework in immunohistochemistry makes your application competitive even without years of paid experience.
What does the histology technician interview process look like?
Most histology technician interviews begin with a phone screen from HR focused on your certification status and schedule availability. A technical interview or panel with the lab manager follows, covering your staining methods, equipment experience, and how you handle quality control failures. Some employers conclude with a brief hands-on skills assessment or a lab tour where they observe how you discuss your workflow and troubleshooting approach.
Where can I find and apply to histology technician jobs?
You can find and apply to histology technician jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, certification level, and preferred location, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
