Tips for Your Certified Respiratory Therapist Job Search
List your credentials in full detail
Spell out your CRT credential, state license, and any specialty certifications like NPS or SDS in a dedicated credentials section. Recruiters filtering applicants often screen on exact credential abbreviations, so omitting the spelled-out form or license number can get you filtered out before a human reads your resume.
Tailor your resume to the care setting
A hospital ICU posting values ventilator management and ACLS experience, while a home health role prioritizes patient education and independent judgment. Swap in setting-specific terminology for each application so your resume reflects the environment the hiring manager is staffing for, not a generic clinical background.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists certified respiratory therapist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by shift type and unit
Many certified respiratory therapist openings specify day, night, or rotating shifts and name the unit, whether that's NICU, PICU, ED, or general floor. Filtering by these details before applying saves time and puts you in front of managers whose staffing gap actually matches your availability and clinical focus.
Prepare for a clinical scenario interview
Respiratory therapy interviews regularly include case-based questions, such as how you'd adjust ventilator settings for a patient in acute respiratory distress or when you'd recommend a bronchodilator over a mucolytic. Practicing your clinical reasoning out loud, not just reviewing protocols, is what separates strong candidates in these rounds.
Negotiate using scope not just title
When discussing an offer, ask specifically about on-call obligations, patient-to-therapist ratios, and whether the role includes intubation privileges or advanced procedures. These factors directly affect workload and professional growth, and bringing them up shows clinical self-awareness that strengthens your position in the conversation.
Certified Respiratory Therapist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most certified respiratory therapists?
The companies hiring the most certified respiratory therapists right now include Ascension, CHRISTUS Health, and CommonSpirit Health, with the largest share of openings in Illinois, Louisiana, and Tennessee, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Health systems and large regional hospital networks consistently account for the highest volume of postings.
How many certified respiratory therapist jobs are remote?
About 0% of certified respiratory therapist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most clinical roles because hands-on patient care is central to the job. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote work are telehealth respiratory monitoring, patient education coordination, and case management roles within managed care organizations.
How do you become a certified respiratory therapist?
You become a certified respiratory therapist by completing an accredited respiratory therapy program, which awards an associate or bachelor's degree, then passing the Therapist Multiple-Choice exam administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care to earn the CRT credential. After credentialing, you apply for a state license in the state where you plan to practice, as requirements vary by state.
How do you get hired as a certified respiratory therapist with little experience?
Employers hiring entry-level certified respiratory therapists typically look for candidates who completed clinical rotations in a variety of care settings during their program, so emphasizing the breadth of those placements on your resume helps. Applying to general medical-surgical or step-down units rather than specialized ICU roles, and being open to night or rotating shifts, meaningfully expands your pool of realistic openings when you're starting out.
What does the certified respiratory therapist interview process look like?
Most certified respiratory therapist interviews begin with a phone screen from HR covering credentials, availability, and shift preferences, followed by an in-person or video interview with the department manager or lead therapist. That second round typically includes clinical scenario questions, a discussion of your experience with specific equipment or patient populations, and sometimes a brief competency check or tour of the unit before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to certified respiratory therapist jobs?
You can find and apply to certified respiratory therapist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your credentials, care setting preference, and location, then apply directly to each listing.
