Tips for Your Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician Job Search
Tailor your CV to each practice setting
Inpatient consult services, outpatient sports medicine clinics, and academic programs each weight different experience. Highlight EMG and nerve conduction competencies for outpatient roles, and lead with acute rehab unit volume and team leadership for inpatient positions.
Verify board certification requirements early
Most hospital-employed and health system roles require ABPM&R board certification or active eligibility. Confirm your certification timeline before applying, since some employers won't extend an offer to candidates more than two years from completion of residency.
Filter openings by subspecialty focus
PM&R job listings vary widely between pain management, pediatric rehab, cancer rehabilitation, and electrodiagnostics. Search by subspecialty keyword alongside the main title so you're not sorting through roles that don't match your fellowship training or clinical interests.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists physical medicine and rehabilitation physician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for productivity and RVU discussions
PM&R interviews almost always include a compensation structure conversation tied to wRVU targets. Know your current or projected wRVU output, ask about the baseline guarantee period, and clarify how procedures like EMG are counted separately from evaluation and management visits.
Follow up with clinical evidence after interviews
After a panel or site visit, send a brief follow-up that references a specific clinical challenge the team raised and how your experience addresses it. This stands out far more than a generic thank-you and keeps you top of mind during the credentialing and committee review period.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians?
The companies hiring the most physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians right now include United Hospital Center, Geisinger, and Geisinger Health Plan, with the largest share of openings in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large academic health systems and post-acute rehabilitation networks tend to post the highest volume of openings consistently.
How many physical medicine and rehabilitation physician jobs are remote?
About 0% of physical medicine and rehabilitation physician openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most clinical roles. Telehealth positions do exist, most commonly in follow-up pain management consultations, spasticity monitoring, and administrative or medical director roles that combine remote oversight with periodic on-site visits.
How do you become a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician?
You complete a four-year medical degree, then a one-year transitional or preliminary year, followed by a three-year accredited PM&R residency program. After residency you may pursue a fellowship in subspecialties such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, pain medicine, or sports medicine. You then obtain ABPM&R board certification and secure state licensure before practicing independently.
Can you get hired as a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician with little experience?
Yes, many health systems hire PM&R physicians directly out of residency for attending roles, particularly in acute inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient musculoskeletal clinics. New attendings can strengthen their candidacy by highlighting EMG volume from training, any locum or moonlighting experience, strong letters from program directors, and a clear subspecialty interest that aligns with the team's clinical needs.
What does the physical medicine and rehabilitation physician interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a phone or video screen with a physician recruiter or department chief, followed by a site visit that includes tours of the rehab unit or clinic, meetings with the clinical team and administration, and a credentialing discussion. Academic positions often add a brief presentation or case review. Final offers usually move through a medical executive committee and can take several weeks to formalize.

You can find and apply to physical medicine and rehabilitation physician jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from health systems, rehabilitation hospitals, outpatient clinics, and academic centers across the United States.
