ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs a wide variety of patient care tasks utilizing a Patient Focused Care model. Follows standardized procedures prescribed in a clinical pathway, including activities related to direct care, diagnostic testing, patient transport and documentation, as directed by RN.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Patient Care:
- Assists with bathing and personal hygiene.
- Assists with lifting, moving and ambulation, applying principles of good body mechanics.
- Assists with elimination; records output.
- Provides nourishments to patients as directed by the RN; assists with meals, records output. Reports changes in patients' condition to RN in a timely manner.
- Answers call lights promptly and relays information to the appropriate staff.
- Obtains and records vital signs as directed.
- Records accurately and appropriately all I & O and interventions.
- Practices and maintains aseptic technique.
- Adheres to all safety precautions.
- Adheres to Universal Precautions.
- Provides care appropriate to the age of each patient served.
Patient Related Activities:
- Updates patient status boards as required.
- Updates patients on ED status every fifteen minutes.
- Accompanies patients on discharge as requested.
- Collects specimens as directed and delivers to lab as requested.
- Assists with pre-operative care as directed by an RN.
- Weighs patients and assists with bed weights as requested.
- Assists with post-mortem care as directed.
- Independently performs EKGs.
- Performs selected respiratory procedures including pulse oximetry, spirometry and others as directed. Independently performs phlebotomy as directed.
- Enters orders into the computer as requested.
- Independently assists with suturing.
Unit Supply/Maintenance:
- Maintains a clean and safe unit environment.
- Follows procedures for securing repairs.
- Stocks rooms and maintains adequate inventories as set by par levels.
- Routinely rotates stock, adhering to procedure/policies regarding dated items.
- Assists with putting supplies away in the store room.
Clerical Duties:
- Answers telephone, relays messages accurately and in a timely manner.
- Copies and faxes records as requested.
- Transfers patients' personal effects including valuables as needed.
- Performs other secretarial functions as directed.
- Accurately performs order entry in a timely manner.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
- Applies effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills. Is receptive and approachable. Follows proper channels of communication.
- Collaborates effectively with other team members to meet patient/family needs.
- Selects appropriate environment to express feelings and frustrations.
- Demonstrates professional conduct, courtesy and respect.
Professional Obligations:
- Demonstrates dependability by reporting to work on time and when scheduled. Demonstrates flexibility in meeting unit staffing needs.
- Utilizes available work time effectively. Satisfactorily complete basic assignments within given time frame and with minimal supervision.
- Promotes a positive image of the unit institution.
- Upholds Patient Bill of Rights.
- Maintains confidentiality.
EDUCATIONAL / MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Basic life Support (BLS) required at time of hire.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Active CNA certificate or;
- Two (2) years of experience in a role as a PCA, Ed Tech or CNA in acute or long term care or;
- 3rd year BSN student who has completed two clinical rotations, or;
- Medical Assistant or;
- EMT.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
- BLS at time of Hire.
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
- General orientation at time of hire. Accucheck, BLS, Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually, PERT, Restraint Protocol, 1:1 Observation Protocol. Health Care.
- BLS from American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Additional cross-training as appropriate to perform diverse job duties. Successfully complete all training programs as determined by the Hospital. Other unit based competencies/skills as required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of basic patient care procedures and medical terminology. Ability to work as part of a team. Data entry and documentation skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Significant walking, bending, stooping, patient lifting and positioning. Manual dexterity for phlebotomy and data entry.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Normal patient care environment. Exposure to patient fluids and waste. Rapid pace and variable environment.
Cognitive Requirements:
- Mental flexibility to perform diverse duties involved in patient care. Good communication skills, written and oral, and ability to follow written and oral instruction.
