Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Accounting Assistant
Match your credentials to the right J-1 category
If you're currently enrolled in an accounting or finance degree program, you qualify for the Intern category. If you've graduated within the past 12 months, apply under Trainee. Misidentifying your category can delay your DS-2019 issuance.
Align your training plan with accounting duties
Your designated sponsor requires a structured training plan before issuing your DS-2019. Draft it around specific accounting tasks: accounts payable processing, reconciliations, or financial reporting. Vague descriptions of general office work commonly get rejected.
Target host employers with international accounting clients
U.S. accounting firms and corporate finance departments that serve multinational clients are more familiar with J-1 host requirements. Search Migrate Mate to filter for roles where employers have actively hosted J-1 exchange visitors in finance and business operations.
Confirm the host employer will sign a Form DS-7002
Before accepting any offer, verify that the hiring organization is willing to co-sign the Training/Internship Placement Plan with your designated sponsor. Without an employer signature, your sponsor cannot process your DS-2019 and your program start date will slip.
Check whether your home country triggers a two-year requirement
Certain nationalities and government-funded participants face a two-year home residency requirement after their J-1 program ends. USCIS maintains the Exchange Visitor Skills List by country, which determines whether this obligation applies to you before you accept a placement.
Use O*NET to frame your specialty occupation language
Designated sponsors review whether your role constitutes substantive training, not clerical work. Pull the Accounting Clerk or Bookkeeping Clerk occupation profile from O*NET and use its task descriptions when writing your training plan to demonstrate the educational value of the position.

Find Accounting Assistant JobsAccounting Assistant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Accounting Assistant role?
Current students enrolled in accounting, finance, or business programs qualify under the Intern category. Recent graduates within 12 months of completing their degree apply under the Trainee category. Both require a structured training plan tied to accounting-specific tasks, and the Trainee category allows placements of up to 18 months, giving you more time to build substantive U.S. work experience.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an Accounting Assistant position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT, not your employer. The employer is the host organization that provides the accounting training. Your designated sponsor issues the DS-2019 form, reviews your training plan, and monitors program compliance throughout your placement. Finding a host employer willing to partner with a designated sponsor is the key step.
Can an Accounting Assistant J-1 position lead to a different visa status afterward?
Completing a J-1 program does not automatically create a path to any other visa status. If the two-year home residency requirement applies to you, you must fulfill it or obtain a waiver before changing to most nonimmigrant visa categories. If the requirement does not apply, some J-1 alumni pursue H-1B or other employer-sponsored options after returning home and securing a new job offer, but J-1 completion alone carries no preferential pathway.
How do I find U.S. employers that will host a J-1 Accounting Assistant?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers in accounting and finance that have hosted international exchange visitors. Host organizations for accounting roles tend to be regional CPA firms, corporate finance departments at mid-sized companies, and nonprofits with international operations. Confirming the employer's willingness to co-sign a DS-7002 Training Plan early in the conversation saves significant time.
What documents do I need before my J-1 accounting program can begin?
You need a signed Training or Internship Placement Plan (DS-7002) co-signed by your host employer, proof of your accounting or finance enrollment or recent graduation, evidence of English language proficiency, health insurance meeting J-1 minimum standards, and your DS-2019 issued by your designated sponsor. Your sponsor will not release the DS-2019 until the host employer's training plan is approved, so securing employer commitment first is critical.
