Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Application Development Manager
Align your credentials to Trainee eligibility
The J-1 Trainee category requires a degree plus one year of related work experience, or five years of experience without a degree. Document your application development leadership roles clearly before approaching any host organization or designated sponsor.
Target host organizations with formal training plans
J-1 Trainee and Specialist placements require a structured Training or Internship Placement Plan (DS-7002). Seek employers who have hosted J-1 participants before, since they already understand the plan documentation your designated sponsor will need to approve.
Search for J-1-aligned roles on Migrate Mate
Finding host employers open to J-1 exchange visitors is the hardest part of this process. Use Migrate Mate to filter Application Development Manager roles at organizations with a demonstrated history of international program participation.
Verify the two-year home residency rule applies to you
Some J-1 participants are subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement before qualifying for H-1B or permanent residence. Check your DS-2019 and J-1 visa stamp carefully, and confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before accepting any offer.
Confirm the host employer's E-Verify enrollment status
Your designated sponsor will assess whether the host organization meets federal compliance standards. Hosts enrolled in E-Verify signal readiness to onboard international exchange visitors, which can accelerate approval of your training plan documentation.
Map your J-1 program length to the project scope
Trainee programs max out at 18 months. If the Application Development Manager role involves a multi-phase product build, confirm the project timeline fits within your authorized program dates before signing an offer, since extensions are not guaranteed.

Find Application Development Manager JobsApplication Development Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Application Development Manager roles?
Most Application Development Manager positions fall under the J-1 Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you hold a relevant degree plus at least one year of post-degree work experience, or five or more years of progressive experience in software or application development without a degree. The Specialist category covers professionals with expertise in a field not yet widely available in the U.S., and may apply in niche technical leadership contexts.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this type of role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your hiring employer. Entities like Cultural Vistas or AIPT act as the official sponsor, issuing your DS-2019 form and monitoring your training plan compliance. Your hiring company is the host organization. This distinction matters because the host cannot issue the DS-2019 themselves, regardless of their size or intent.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors in this role?
Most job boards don't filter by J-1 host eligibility, which makes it hard to identify the right organizations. Migrate Mate lets you search Application Development Manager roles at employers with a track record of international program participation, saving significant research time. From there, you confirm J-1 compatibility directly with the employer and then loop in a designated sponsor to administer the visa.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Application Development Manager J-1 participants?
It can. If your J-1 program is funded by a U.S. government agency, your home country's government, or if your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, you'll be subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement. This affects your ability to change to H-1B or apply for a green card afterward. Review your DS-2019 and visa stamp, and consult your designated sponsor before accepting an offer if you're considering long-term U.S. residency.
What does the DS-7002 training plan need to show for a management-level role?
The DS-7002 must outline specific skills you'll develop, the supervision structure, and how the training differs from regular employment. For an Application Development Manager position, this means documenting exposure to U.S. software development methodologies, team leadership practices, or product lifecycle management approaches not available in your home country. Your designated sponsor reviews the plan before issuing the DS-2019, so vague descriptions will slow down or block approval.
