Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Learning And Development Manager
Align your credentials to the Trainee category
The J-1 Trainee category requires a degree plus one year of relevant experience, or five years of work experience in your field. Document your instructional design, facilitation, or organizational development background with official transcripts and employer letters before approaching host organizations.
Build a training plan before interviewing
Host employers file a DS-7002 Training or Internship Placement Plan with your designated sponsor. Draft a proposed learning agenda tied to measurable L&D competencies, curriculum design, needs assessment, performance metrics, so employers can adapt it rather than build one from scratch.
Search for J-1-sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Learning and Development Manager roles by employers with active J-1 exchange visitor history, saving you the manual work of vetting each company's sponsorship track record before you apply.
Verify the 2-year home residency requirement early
Certain J-1 participants, particularly those funded by their home government or whose skills appear on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, must return home for two years after the program before switching to H-1B or a green card. Confirm your country's status with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Target employers with established L&D infrastructure
Companies with dedicated learning functions, existing LMS platforms, or in-house training teams are far more likely to understand the DS-2019 host requirements and structure a compliant 18-month Trainee program than those building L&D from scratch.
Confirm the sponsor's category authorization before signing
Not every designated sponsor is authorized to issue DS-2019 forms for the Specialist or Trainee category. Ask your prospective host employer which sponsor organization they work with and verify that sponsor holds the specific program category authorization matching your background.

Find Learning And Development Manager JobsLearning And Development Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Learning and Development Manager role?
Most professionals pursuing L&D Manager roles qualify under the J-1 Trainee category, which covers those with a relevant degree plus one year of experience, or five years of field experience. Senior practitioners with highly specialized expertise in organizational learning, instructional design, or leadership development may qualify under the Specialist category instead. Your designated sponsor determines which category applies based on your background.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this role, the employer or a separate organization?
The employer acts as your host, not your visa sponsor. A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, issues your DS-2019 form, approves your training plan, and monitors program compliance. The employer must work through one of these designated sponsors to bring you on as a J-1 exchange visitor.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Learning and Development Manager?
Migrate Mate lets you search for Learning and Development Manager roles filtered by employers with J-1 exchange visitor history, so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with the host requirements. Look for organizations with structured L&D departments, since they're better positioned to file a compliant DS-7002 training plan and coordinate with a designated sponsor.
Does the J-1 Trainee program allow me to work as a full Learning and Development Manager, or only shadow one?
The J-1 Trainee program is designed for skills development through structured observation and hands-on participation, not a permanent employment arrangement. You can carry out meaningful L&D work, facilitation, curriculum development, needs analysis, but your DS-7002 training plan must frame activities as developmental rather than purely operational. The program duration for the Trainee category is capped at 18 months.
What happens to my J-1 status if the host employer ends the engagement early?
Your J-1 status is tied to your DS-2019, not your employment contract. If the host terminates your engagement, your designated sponsor must be notified immediately, and your status is only as valid as your program end date. You have a 30-day grace period after program termination to depart the U.S. Transferring to a new host under the same or a different designated sponsor may be possible if done promptly.
