Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Information Security Officer
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Pull the O*NET profile for Information Security Officers before you apply. Confirm your degree, certifications like CISSP or CISM, and prior experience map to the technical competencies listed. Gaps in your profile weaken your training plan at the sponsor review stage.
Target host employers with active security programs
Focus your search on organizations that operate formal security operations centers or hold FedRAMP, ISO 27001, or SOC 2 certifications. These employers have documented training environments, which is exactly what a J-1 Trainee or Specialist training plan requires.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1 compatible roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. employer listings by roles that align with J-1 sponsorship. Searching by job function and industry helps you identify host organizations whose security teams regularly work with exchange visitors on structured training programs.
Negotiate the training plan before your offer letter
Your DS-2019 requires a detailed Training or Internship Placement Plan (Form DS-7002) signed by your host employer and designated sponsor. Get the host to commit to specific rotation areas, such as threat detection, incident response, or compliance auditing, before you finalize any offer.
Verify whether your category triggers the two-year rule
Trainee category placements in information security generally do not trigger the two-year home residency requirement, but Specialist and Research Scholar placements funded by a home-country government sometimes do. Confirm your category with your designated sponsor before accepting the host employer's offer.
Confirm your designated sponsor's sector coverage
Not all State Department-designated sponsors issue DS-2019 forms for private-sector cybersecurity roles. Cultural Vistas and AIPT regularly administer Trainee and Specialist programs in technical fields. Verify that your chosen sponsor covers your host employer's industry and company type before submitting your application.

Find Information Security Officer JobsInformation Security Officer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Information Security Officer role?
Most Information Security Officer placements fall under the Trainee category if you're within five years of graduation or early in your career, or the Specialist category if you have substantial professional experience and are entering for a focused knowledge-exchange program. Research Scholar applies if your placement is with a university or research institution rather than a private-sector host employer.
Does the J-1 visa for this role require employer sponsorship the way an H-1B does?
No. Under the J-1 program, the visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring company. The employer is your host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, signs your training plan, and monitors compliance. Your host employer does not file a petition with USCIS the way an H-1B employer would.
What documents should I prepare before approaching a host employer?
Gather your academic transcripts, professional certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or CEH, a current CV tailored to U.S. cybersecurity roles, and a draft objective statement describing your training goals. Host employers and designated sponsors both review these materials when assessing whether your background supports a credible training plan under the J-1 exchange visitor program.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors in cybersecurity?
Migrate Mate lets you search U.S. employer listings filtered by role type and sponsorship compatibility, making it easier to identify organizations whose security teams have experience working with exchange visitors. Focus on employers in sectors with established compliance cultures, such as financial services, defense contracting, and healthcare technology, where structured security training programs are common.
Could an Information Security Officer placement trigger the two-year home residency requirement?
It depends on your funding source and your home country's agreements with the United States. Placements funded by your home government or an international organization, or in fields on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, can trigger the requirement under INA Section 212(e). Your designated sponsor reviews your specific situation and notes any home residency requirement directly on your DS-2019 before you travel.
