Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a SAP ABAP Developer
Align your ABAP portfolio with U.S. role requirements
Document your SAP module experience, S/4HANA migration projects, and any ABAP OO or Fiori work with version-controlled code samples. U.S. host employers reviewing J-1 Trainee candidates expect evidence of hands-on deliverables, not just certifications.
Confirm your J-1 category before targeting roles
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, you qualify for the Intern category. If you've graduated within the past year, the Trainee category applies. Misidentifying your category early causes training plan rejections later, so clarify this before submitting applications.
Search for host employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter SAP ABAP Developer roles by J-1 sponsorship compatibility. Host employers who have structured training programs and prior exchange visitor experience are more likely to support the DS-2019 application process through a designated sponsor.
Require a signed training plan before accepting any offer
The DS-2019 process requires a formal Training or Internship Placement Plan detailing your ABAP learning objectives, supervision structure, and weekly schedule. Ask the host employer to commit to this document before you accept an offer, as delays here stall your visa timeline.
Verify the host employer's J-1 compliance standing
Host organizations must maintain a compliant workplace under State Department regulations. Ask directly whether they've hosted J-1 Trainees before and whether they're prepared to work with a designated sponsor such as AIPT or Cultural Vistas to administer your DS-2019.
Check the two-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 Trainee participants are subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement upon program completion. This is typically triggered by government funding or skills on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Confirm your status with the designated sponsor before accepting a role.

Find SAP ABAP Developer JobsSAP ABAP Developer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an SAP ABAP Developer?
The Intern category covers current students pursuing a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. The Trainee category covers professionals who graduated within the past 12 months or have at least one year of relevant SAP work experience abroad. Both categories require a structured training plan with defined ABAP learning objectives, submitted by a State Department-designated sponsor organization.
Who actually sponsors a J-1 visa for this role, the employer or someone else?
The hiring company is the host employer, not the visa sponsor. The actual J-1 sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as AIPT, Cultural Vistas, or IIE, that reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your program for compliance. The host employer funds and supervises your work, but the designated sponsor organization holds legal responsibility for your exchange visitor status.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 SAP ABAP Developers?
Migrate Mate lists SAP ABAP Developer roles filtered by J-1 sponsorship compatibility, making it the most direct way to identify host employers who have experience with exchange visitor programs. Prioritize employers in enterprise software consulting, large-scale ERP implementation firms, and corporate IT departments, as these environments are more likely to have structured training programs that satisfy J-1 Trainee requirements.
What documentation should I prepare before a J-1 employer interview?
Prepare a detailed breakdown of your SAP project history including modules used, role scope, and outcomes. Compile official academic transcripts or degree certificates translated into English. Gather a current resume formatted for U.S. standards and a one-page summary of your proposed training objectives in ABAP development. The designated sponsor will need all of this to build and approve your Training or Internship Placement Plan.
Can a J-1 SAP ABAP Developer role lead to long-term U.S. employment?
J-1 status is temporary and program-specific, so it doesn't directly convert to permanent employment authorization. However, completing a Trainee program with a U.S. employer can establish the relationship needed for that employer to later sponsor an H-1B or other work visa. If the two-year home residency requirement applies to you, it must be fulfilled or waived before switching to most other nonimmigrant visa categories.
