Build a training plan before applying
J-1 Trainee and Intern categories require a detailed training plan outlining your learning objectives, supervision structure, and phase progression. Draft this document before outreach so host employers see you as ready to move quickly through the DS-2019 process.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility
The J-1 Intern category requires current enrollment in a degree program, while Trainee is for professionals with at least one year of post-degree work experience. Applying under the wrong category stalls your DS-2019 issuance and can trigger denial from your designated sponsor.
Target host employers with prototype or launch roles
New product development positions map most cleanly to J-1 training programs when the role involves cross-functional exposure: concept validation, supplier coordination, or go-to-market testing. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers whose open roles reflect this structured learning environment.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule early
Some J-1 participants in Trainee and Intern categories are subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e), particularly if funded by their home government. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer, since this affects future H-1B or green card eligibility.
Align your training timeline with product cycles
J-1 Trainee programs run up to 18 months and Intern programs up to 12 months. Structure your training plan around a complete product development cycle so your designated sponsor can justify each phase to USCIS and the host employer can demonstrate measurable skill transfer.
Verify host employer compliance requirements upfront
Host employers in new product development must maintain a written training agreement, provide a designated supervisor, and cooperate with your sponsor's site visits. Confirm these obligations are in place before your designated sponsor finalizes the DS-2019, as gaps here are the most common source of program termination.

Find New Product Development JobsNew Product Development J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a new product development role?
Most new product development positions fall under the J-1 Trainee category for professionals with a degree plus at least one year of relevant work experience, or the J-1 Intern category for students currently enrolled in a degree program. The role must involve structured, progressive training rather than routine production work. Your designated sponsor confirms category eligibility before issuing the DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a product development role?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the hiring company. The hiring company is the host employer. The designated sponsor reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors program compliance throughout your stay. The host employer provides the actual work environment and supervision.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 product development trainee?
Search Migrate Mate for new product development roles at companies with J-1 hosting history. Many employers in consumer goods, medical devices, and manufacturing have established relationships with designated sponsors and understand the training plan and DS-2019 requirements. Filtering by role type and industry on Migrate Mate surfaces these host employers directly without cold outreach.
Can the two-year home residency requirement affect my plans after a J-1 product development placement?
Yes. If your J-1 exchange program was funded by your home government or if your home country is on the State Department's skills list, you may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). This means you must return home for two years before applying for H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visas. Your designated sponsor can confirm whether this applies to you before you accept an offer.
What does the training plan for a J-1 new product development role need to include?
The training plan, submitted on USCIS Form DS-7002, must outline specific learning objectives tied to product development competencies, the phases of training with timelines, the name and qualifications of your on-site supervisor, and how each phase builds on the previous one. Vague descriptions like 'assist with product launches' are insufficient. Your designated sponsor will reject plans that don't demonstrate progressive skill acquisition.
