Document your field-specific technical training history
Your DS-2019 training plan must tie directly to service operations, team coordination, or field management competencies you've already begun developing abroad. Compile performance reviews, organizational charts, and project records that map your progression before you start approaching host employers.
Target host employers with existing J-1 infrastructure
Companies that have hosted J-1 Trainees or Specialists before already understand the DS-2019 training plan requirement and the designated sponsor's compliance role. Search Migrate Mate to identify Regional Service Manager roles at employers with documented J-1 hosting experience.
Verify your J-1 category eligibility before applying
If you graduated within the past 12 months, the Trainee category applies. If you have five or more years of post-degree professional experience in service management, the Specialist category may fit better. Applying under the wrong category can delay or invalidate your DS-2019 issuance.
Negotiate training plan scope during the offer stage
The J-1 training plan is a legally binding document your designated sponsor reviews and signs. Align it with measurable Regional Service Manager responsibilities, such as escalation protocols, SLA oversight, and cross-functional coordination, so it reflects real work rather than a generic job description.
Research the two-year home residency requirement early
The Trainee and Specialist categories can carry a two-year home residency requirement if your home country or field appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Confirm your status through the U.S. Department of State before accepting an offer, since this requirement affects any future H-1B or green card eligibility.
Confirm wage compliance through OFLC Wage Search
Your host employer must pay you a wage comparable to similarly situated U.S. workers in the same geographic area. Use OFLC Wage Search to look up prevailing wage data for service management roles in your target region before finalizing your training offer.

Find Regional Service Manager JobsRegional Service Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Regional Service Manager role?
The Trainee category applies if you're within 12 months of completing a degree or have less than one year of post-graduation work experience. The Specialist category applies if you have at least five years of specialized professional experience in service management. A current student completing a degree would look at the Intern category instead. Your designated sponsor confirms the correct category when issuing your DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this type of role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not your hiring employer. The employer acts as the host organization and provides the work placement. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, reviews and signs the training plan, and monitors compliance throughout your exchange program. These are two separate entities with distinct responsibilities.
How do I find Regional Service Manager host employers open to J-1 arrangements?
Most employers don't advertise J-1 compatibility in standard job postings, which makes targeted discovery important. Migrate Mate surfaces U.S. employers and Regional Service Manager roles that align with J-1 sponsorship arrangements, so you're not manually filtering through listings that may never mention exchange visitor programs. Focusing your search this way saves significant time during the identification stage.
Can the two-year home residency requirement affect my Regional Service Manager placement?
Yes. If your home country or occupational field appears on the U.S. Department of State's Exchange Visitor Skills List, you may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement after your J-1 program ends. This bars you from changing to H-1B or most other work visa statuses without either fulfilling the residency period or obtaining a waiver. Confirm your status before accepting any placement offer.
What does the J-1 training plan need to cover for a service management role?
The training plan must describe specific, measurable objectives tied to your development as a service professional, including areas like operational workflow management, escalation procedures, cross-departmental coordination, and performance reporting. Generic job duty lists are routinely rejected by designated sponsors. Your host employer and designated sponsor develop this document together, and it must demonstrate that the program advances skills you couldn't acquire in your home country.
