Clarify your DS-2019 category early
Intern status requires current enrollment in a degree program, while Trainee status fits recent graduates with at least one year of relevant work experience. Choosing the wrong category delays your DS-2019 issuance and can invalidate your program before it starts.
Build a training plan before approaching employers
Host employers must co-sign a formal training plan outlining your learning objectives, supervision structure, and skill benchmarks. Arriving with a draft plan specific to your entry level role makes employers far more willing to engage with the J-1 visa process.
Search for J-1 host employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter entry level openings at U.S. employers that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before. Prior hosting history signals the employer already understands the DS-2019 process and won't back out over administrative unfamiliarity.
Verify field-of-study alignment before accepting offers
Your entry level role must fall within or directly adjacent to your degree or professional field. A marketing graduate placed in an unrelated operations role risks program termination by the designated sponsor during a compliance review.
Confirm the host employer's E-Verify enrollment status
Designated sponsors typically require host employers to be E-Verify participants. Ask your prospective host directly before your designated sponsor issues the DS-2019, since discovering non-enrollment after acceptance can restart your job search from scratch.
Understand the 30-day grace period limits your options
After your J-1 program end date, you have only 30 days to depart, transfer to a new program, or change status. For entry level positions, negotiate an end date that accounts for this window before signing your offer letter.
Entry Level J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an entry level job seeker?
The Intern category applies if you're currently enrolled full-time in a degree program outside the United States. The Trainee category applies if you've graduated within the past 12 months and have at least one year of work or study experience in your field. Your designated sponsor, not your host employer, determines which category you qualify for based on your documentation.
Does my host employer sponsor my J-1 visa directly?
No. The host employer where you'll work is not your visa sponsor. Your J-1 sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as IIE, CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, that reviews your program, issues your DS-2019, and monitors compliance throughout your exchange. The host employer signs the training plan and provides the work placement, but the designated sponsor carries legal responsibility for your status.
Can I work in any entry level role on a J-1 visa?
Not quite. Your entry level role must align with your field of study or prior professional training. A computer science student can't obtain J-1 approval for an unrelated customer service role without a demonstrable skills connection. Your designated sponsor reviews the training plan for this alignment before issuing the DS-2019, so confirming fit early prevents delays.
How do I find entry level employers that are open to J-1 program participants?
Use Migrate Mate to search for entry level positions at U.S. employers with documented J-1 hosting history. Employers who have hosted exchange visitors before are familiar with the DS-2019 workflow, co-signing training plans, and reporting obligations, which significantly reduces administrative friction on your end.
Does the J-1 two-year home residency requirement apply to entry level positions?
It depends on your funding source and country of origin. If your program is financed by your home government or the U.S. government, or if your country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, you'll be subject to the two-year home residency requirement before you can change to H-1B visa, L-1 visa, or immigrant status. Your designated sponsor can confirm whether your specific situation triggers this requirement before you accept the placement.
