Align your CV to specialty occupation standards
Reframe your consulting experience around measurable project outcomes and domain-specific methodologies. Sponsors and host employers assess whether your background fits a structured training plan, not a generalist service role.
Target host employers with existing sponsor relationships
Some consulting firms have already signed host agreements with designated sponsors like Cultural Vistas or AIPT. Roles at those firms move faster because the compliance infrastructure is already in place for your DS-2019 issuance.
Search J-1-friendly consulting roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Professional Services Consultant positions at U.S. employers that actively host J-1 exchange visitors. This narrows your search to organizations already set up to coordinate with a designated sponsor.
Confirm your program category before negotiating offers
If you hold a degree and two years of relevant consulting experience, you qualify for the Trainee category. Less experience may limit you to Intern, which requires current enrollment. Getting this wrong delays DS-2019 issuance after an offer is accepted.
Request a detailed individual training plan from your host
Your designated sponsor requires a Form DS-7002 outlining specific learning objectives, supervision structure, and phase-by-phase milestones. Vague plans get rejected, so push your host employer to document consulting deliverables and skill benchmarks explicitly.
Check whether your role triggers the home residency requirement
Consulting engagements funded by a government agency or involving skills on the Exchange Visitor Skills List can trigger the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e), affecting your H-1B visa or green card eligibility afterward.
Professional Services Consultant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Professional Services Consultant roles?
Most Professional Services Consultants qualify under the Trainee category, which requires a degree plus at least one year of relevant work experience, or five years of experience without a degree. Current students pursuing a consulting internship may qualify under the Intern category instead. The Specialist category applies to recognized experts in a narrow consulting field, but it is far less common and requires demonstrated peer recognition.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a consulting role, the employer or a separate organization?
The visa sponsor is always a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE. Your host employer does not issue the visa. Instead, the designated sponsor evaluates the training plan, issues your DS-2019 certificate, and monitors compliance throughout your program. The host employer and the sponsor must cooperate, but they are legally distinct parties with separate responsibilities.
How do I find consulting employers that are already set up to host J-1 exchange visitors?
Use Migrate Mate to identify Professional Services Consultant openings at U.S. employers that have a track record of hosting J-1 exchange visitors. Targeting organizations that already have host agreements with a designated sponsor saves significant time because the compliance and DS-2019 issuance process is already familiar to them.
Can the two-year home residency requirement affect my plans after a J-1 consulting program?
Yes. If your consulting role is funded by your home government, a U.S. government agency, or if your home country has designated consulting as a needed skill under the Exchange Visitor Skills List, you may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). This bars you from applying for an H-1B, L-1 visa, or immigrant visa from inside the U.S. until you fulfill or receive a waiver of that requirement.
What is the DS-7002 and why does it matter for a consulting J-1 application?
The DS-7002 is the Training or Internship Placement Plan that your host employer and the designated sponsor must complete and sign. It documents your consulting objectives, supervision arrangements, phase-by-phase skill benchmarks, and the hours dedicated to each activity. Sponsors reject vague or generic plans, so ask your host to specify the consulting methodologies, tools, and client-facing deliverables you will work on during each phase.
