Align your training plan with sales competencies
Your DS-2019 requires a detailed training plan outlining specific skills you'll develop. Document how the role builds competencies in account strategy, CRM systems, and consultative selling so the designated sponsor can approve it without delays.
Verify your J-1 category before applying
Current students enrolled abroad typically qualify under the Intern category, while recent graduates with relevant work experience qualify as Trainees. Applying under the wrong category is the most common reason designated sponsors reject training plan submissions.
Search for host employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter National Account Sales roles at U.S. companies that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before. Employers already familiar with the DS-2019 process and host-employer obligations move faster and less often drop candidates mid-process.
Ask employers about host-employer registration
Before accepting an offer, confirm the company is willing to complete the host-employer agreement required by their designated sponsor. Many employers in sales are unfamiliar with this step and may withdraw offers once they see the compliance documentation involved.
Check your home country's two-year rule early
Nationals from certain countries or those receiving government funding face a two-year home residency requirement after their J-1 program ends. This affects whether you can transition to an H-1B or other work visa without first obtaining a waiver, so clarify your status before signing any offer.
Time your application around program duration limits
J-1 Trainees in sales-related fields can stay up to 18 months. Build your job search timeline backward from that cap so your training plan, offer letter, and DS-2019 issuance align with the host employer's actual project timeline and onboarding schedule.

Find National Account Sales JobsNational Account Sales J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a National Account Sales role?
The Trainee category is the most common fit for National Account Sales. It's designed for foreign nationals who have a degree and at least one year of relevant work experience, or five years of experience without a degree. Current students enrolled in a business or related program may qualify under the Intern category instead, which has a shorter maximum duration.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a sales role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring company. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form and oversee program compliance. The company offering you the National Account Sales position is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. Both parties must agree to the arrangement and sign off on your training plan before the DS-2019 is issued.
How do I find National Account Sales employers who understand J-1 requirements?
Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. employers actively open to J-1 exchange visitors in sales roles. Targeting companies with prior J-1 hosting experience matters because they already understand the host-employer agreement, training plan requirements, and the difference between their role and the designated sponsor's role, which significantly shortens the time from offer to DS-2019 issuance.
Can I work on commission-based pay under a J-1 Trainee visa?
Commission-only compensation structures create problems for J-1 Trainee approval. Designated sponsors typically require that your compensation be consistent with U.S. workers in similar roles and verifiable as a structured salary or salary-plus-commission arrangement. A purely variable pay structure can raise concerns during training plan review because it makes the educational and professional development purpose of the program harder to document.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to J-1 sales trainees?
It depends on your nationality, your funding source, and whether your home country appears on the State Department's skills list for exchange visitors. Many J-1 Trainees in business fields are not subject to the requirement, but nationals from specific countries or those whose training is funded by their home government often are. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before finalizing any offer, since the requirement affects your ability to change visa status inside the U.S. afterward.
