Document your ETL and pipeline specializations
Compile project portfolios showing hands-on work with tools like Talend, Informatica, or Apache NiFi. Designated sponsors evaluate your technical background against the training plan, so specific deliverables carry more weight than job titles.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility early
The J-1 Intern category requires current enrollment in a degree program, while Trainee is for graduates with at least one year of relevant work experience. Applying under the wrong category causes DS-2019 delays that can push back your start date.
Search Migrate Mate to find host employers
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies actively hosting J-1 exchange visitors in data and software roles. Filtering by role type and location narrows your list to organizations already familiar with the DS-2019 process.
Confirm the host employer will sign your training plan
Before accepting an offer, verify the employer will complete a structured training plan (Form DS-7002). Many companies treat J-1 hosting as unfamiliar territory, so raising this during negotiations prevents last-minute program withdrawals.
Check the two-year home residency requirement upfront
Data Integration Developer roles funded by government grants or involving skills on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may trigger the two-year home residency requirement under INA 212(e). Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before signing any offer.
Align your training plan with OFLC Wage Search benchmarks
Designated sponsors verify that your compensation meets prevailing wage standards for your role and location. Cross-reference your offered salary against OFLC Wage Search data for your SOC code before your sponsor submits the DS-2019.

Find Data Integration Developer JobsData Integration Developer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Data Integration Developer role?
Most Data Integration Developers qualify under the J-1 Trainee category if they have a relevant degree plus at least one year of post-graduation work experience, or under the J-1 Intern category if they are currently enrolled in a degree program. The Trainee category suits mid-career professionals building advanced ETL, pipeline, or data warehouse skills at a U.S. host organization.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the employer or a separate organization?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, not the hiring employer. The employer acts as your host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, reviews your training plan, and monitors program compliance throughout your exchange period.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 Data Integration Developer?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors in technical and data roles. Many employers are open to hosting but are unfamiliar with the process, so targeting organizations already active in exchange programs significantly reduces the time spent educating hiring managers about DS-2019 requirements.
Does a Data Integration Developer placement trigger the two-year home residency requirement?
It depends on your funding source and nationality. If your exchange is funded by the U.S. government or your home government, or if your home country lists data integration or software development skills on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, the two-year home residency requirement under INA 212(e) may apply. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
What does the training plan need to include for a J-1 data role?
Form DS-7002 must outline the specific skills, tools, and competencies you will develop, such as data pipeline architecture, ETL process optimization, or cloud data integration. It must include a week-by-week or phase-by-phase breakdown, supervision details, and evaluation checkpoints. Both you and the host employer sign it, and the designated sponsor reviews it before issuing the DS-2019.
