Document your instructional design credentials specifically
Assemble a portfolio showing curriculum frameworks you've built, learning standards you've aligned to, and assessment tools you've developed. Designated sponsors evaluate Trainee and Specialist applicants on field-specific evidence, not just academic transcripts.
Identify which J-1 category fits your career stage
Recent graduates with a degree in education or instructional design typically qualify as Interns or Trainees. Professionals with five or more years applying curriculum theory in a specialized field may qualify as Specialists. Your category determines which designated sponsors you can apply through.
Target host organizations with established training plans
School districts, edtech companies, nonprofits, and university extension offices regularly host J-1 Trainees in curriculum roles. Search Migrate Mate to find U.S. employers who have structured training programs matching instructional design work, which designated sponsors require before issuing a DS-2019.
Verify whether the host employer role triggers a home residency requirement
The two-year home-country physical presence requirement applies to J-1 holders whose program is government-funded or whose home country lists the field as in shortage. Curriculum development is government-listed in some countries, so confirm your eligibility for a waiver before signing an offer.
Align your training plan to O*NET before sponsor review
Designated sponsors use O*NET occupation data to validate that your proposed activities match your field. Map your daily tasks as a Curriculum Developer to the O*NET profile before your sponsor submits your Training or Internship Placement Plan, which shortens back-and-forth during DS-2019 issuance.
Clarify who pays the DS-2019 program fee at the offer stage
Designated sponsors charge program administration fees that host employers sometimes cover, sometimes pass to the exchange visitor, and sometimes split. Confirm this during negotiations, before you accept an offer, so unexpected costs don't affect your decision or delay your sponsor enrollment.

Find Curriculum Developer JobsCurriculum Developer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Curriculum Developer roles?
Most Curriculum Developer positions fall under the J-1 Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you've completed a degree in education, instructional design, or a related field within the past 12 months, or if you have less than five years of post-degree experience. Specialist applies to recognized experts with a minimum of five years of specialized experience in curriculum theory or instructional systems design.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Curriculum Developer position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring employer. Organizations like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT issue your DS-2019 form and are legally responsible for your program compliance. Your hiring organization is the host employer. You need both: a host willing to structure a training program and a designated sponsor willing to administer it.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Curriculum Developer?
Use Migrate Mate to search for U.S. employers and roles that align with J-1 sponsorship in education and instructional design. Look for host organizations in school districts, edtech, and nonprofit sectors, where structured J-1 Trainee programs in curriculum development are more common than in general corporate settings.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Curriculum Developers?
It depends on your home country and funding source. If your country's government has designated curriculum development or education as a field with a skills shortage, or if your exchange program receives U.S. or home-country government funding, the requirement likely applies. Check the Exchange Visitor Skills List published by the State Department and consult your designated sponsor before accepting any offer.
What does a J-1 Training Placement Plan require for a Curriculum Developer role?
The Training or Internship Placement Plan, Form DS-7002, must detail the specific skills and knowledge you'll acquire, phase by phase, with supervision methods and evaluation criteria. For Curriculum Developer roles, this typically means outlining stages such as needs analysis, content development, pilot testing, and revision cycles, mapped to measurable learning outcomes your host organization will evaluate.
