J-1 Visa Daycare Jobs
Daycare roles in the United States are available to international exchange visitors through the J-1 Au Pair or Trainee program categories, depending on your background and host arrangement. Securing J-1 sponsorship requires a designated sponsor organization to issue your DS-2019 before you can begin work with a U.S. host employer.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Daycare
Document your early childhood credentials now
Gather transcripts, childcare certifications, and reference letters from supervisors before you apply. Designated sponsors and host employers expect proof that your training aligns with the J-1 Trainee or Au Pair category requirements from the start.
Verify your program category before applying
Current students in childcare or early education programs typically qualify under the J-1 Intern category, while working professionals with at least one year of experience apply as Trainees. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019 and can void a host offer.
Search Migrate Mate to find daycare host employers
Filter by role and J-1 compatibility on Migrate Mate to identify daycare centers and early childhood programs that have hosted international exchange visitors. Targeting employers with prior J-1 host experience shortens the onboarding timeline significantly.
Confirm the host's training plan before accepting
Your designated sponsor requires a signed Training or Internship Placement Plan before issuing your DS-2019. Ask the daycare host explicitly whether they can complete this documentation, since many smaller centers are unfamiliar with this step.
Check your home-country residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants in childcare-related exchange programs are subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement after their program ends. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether this applies to your category before committing to a host placement.
Account for visa processing time in your start date
After your designated sponsor issues the DS-2019, you still need to complete the DS-160 application, pay the SEVIS fee, and attend a consular interview. Build at least 60 to 90 days of lead time into any agreed start date with your daycare host.

Find Daycare JobsDaycare J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers daycare and childcare roles?
Most daycare positions fall under the J-1 Au Pair category for live-in childcare arrangements, or the J-1 Trainee or Intern categories for structured early childhood education placements. The right category depends on whether you are currently enrolled in a related program, how much professional experience you have, and the structure of the host placement.
Who actually sponsors a J-1 visa for a daycare position?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the daycare employer. Organizations such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or InterExchange issue the DS-2019 form and monitor your program compliance. The daycare center is your host employer, not your visa sponsor, and cannot issue the DS-2019 on its own.
How can I find daycare employers that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before?
Migrate Mate lets you search U.S. daycare and early childhood employers by J-1 compatibility, so you can focus on hosts that already understand the DS-2019 and training plan requirements. Targeting employers with prior J-1 host experience reduces the risk of losing an offer because the employer is unfamiliar with the process.
Does a daycare J-1 placement require a formal training plan?
Yes. For Intern and Trainee category placements, your designated sponsor requires a completed Training or Internship Placement Plan before issuing your DS-2019. The plan must detail your learning objectives, supervision structure, and program goals. Many small daycare centers have not completed this before, so it is worth discussing the requirement directly during the interview stage.
What happens to my J-1 status if the daycare host ends the placement early?
If your host terminates the placement, your designated sponsor must be notified immediately. Depending on the circumstances, the sponsor may help you transfer to a new qualified host within your authorized program dates or initiate the process to terminate your DS-2019. You do not automatically fall out of status the day the placement ends, but you have very limited time to resolve the situation.
