Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Enrollment Specialist
Align your credentials to the Specialist category
The J-1 Specialist category requires demonstrated expertise in a field not easily trained in the U.S. Document your enrollment management experience, any credentialing software certifications, and measurable outcomes from student recruitment or retention work before approaching host employers.
Target host employers with structured training programs
Universities, community colleges, and hospital patient access departments are the most active host sites for Enrollment Specialist exchanges. Roles tied to CRM implementation, financial aid processing, or international student onboarding are easier to structure as training objectives on the required training plan.
Search for J-1-aligned roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find U.S. employers posting Enrollment Specialist roles with exchange visitor pathways. Filtering by institutions with active J-1 hosting history saves time compared to cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with the DS-2019 process.
Confirm the designated sponsor before accepting an offer
Your host employer is not your visa sponsor. Before signing an offer letter, ask which State Department-designated organization will issue your DS-2019. Organizations like Cultural Vistas or AIPT administer Trainee and Specialist programs and must approve your training plan independently of your employer.
Check whether your role triggers the home residency requirement
The J-1 two-year home residency requirement applies if your home country government funded your exchange or if your field appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Enrollment Specialist roles funded by certain bilateral agreements may carry this restriction, which affects any future H-1B or green card filing.
Build a training plan around measurable enrollment tasks
Designated sponsors require a detailed training plan before issuing the DS-2019. Structure yours around specific deliverables, such as processing a set volume of applications, configuring enrollment software modules, or training staff, to satisfy the sponsor's program objectives and USCIS exchange visitor regulations.

Find Enrollment Specialist JobsEnrollment Specialist J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Enrollment Specialist role?
Most Enrollment Specialist exchanges fall under the Trainee category if you have fewer than five years of professional experience, or the Specialist category if you bring recognized expertise in a specialized subfield like international admissions, enrollment technology, or financial aid compliance. Current students completing a degree may qualify under the Intern category instead, provided the role relates directly to their field of study.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if I'm hired as an Enrollment Specialist?
Your hiring employer is the host organization, not the visa sponsor. The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE, that reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your compliance throughout the program. Your employer must work with one of these designated sponsors to facilitate your exchange, and you should confirm this arrangement before accepting an offer.
How do I find host employers who are familiar with J-1 sponsorship for this role?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point for discovering U.S. employers posting Enrollment Specialist roles with exchange visitor pathways. Institutions with established international student services offices or those that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors previously are far more likely to have an existing relationship with a designated sponsor, which significantly shortens the setup timeline on the employer side.
Can I transition from J-1 to H-1B status after working as an Enrollment Specialist?
You can pursue H-1B status after your J-1 program ends, but only if you're not subject to the two-year home residency requirement. If that requirement applies, you must either return home for two years or obtain a waiver before USCIS will approve a change to H-1B or most immigrant visa categories. Confirm your residency requirement status with your designated sponsor before planning any status change.
What does the training plan need to cover for an Enrollment Specialist exchange?
Designated sponsors require a training plan that outlines specific learning objectives, supervision structure, and measurable outcomes tied to your role. For Enrollment Specialist positions, this typically means detailing exposure to U.S. admissions workflows, student information systems, regulatory compliance procedures, and any cross-functional collaboration with financial aid or registrar teams. Vague or overly broad plans are the most common reason sponsors delay or deny DS-2019 issuance.
