Document your specialized account management expertise
Designated sponsors classify National Account Director experience under business and management training categories. Compile evidence of portfolio scope, revenue responsibility, and cross-functional leadership to satisfy the training plan requirements your DS-2019 application will need.
Verify your role qualifies under Trainee or Specialist
Professionals with substantial post-degree work history typically qualify under the J-1 Trainee or Specialist category. Check whether your years of experience and degree level meet the category's eligibility threshold before approaching host employers or designated sponsors.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-friendly host employers
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies actively hosting J-1 exchange visitors in senior sales and account leadership roles. Filtering by role function lets you target employers already familiar with the host organization obligations the program requires.
Ask host employers about existing DS-2019 relationships
Host employers don't issue the DS-2019 themselves. During negotiations, ask whether the company already works with a designated sponsor organization such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, since an established relationship shortens your activation timeline considerably.
Clarify home-residency requirement exposure upfront
Some J-1 participants face a two-year home-country residency requirement before changing to certain U.S. visa categories. National Account Directors from countries on the Exchange Visitor Skills List or funded by their home government should confirm their status early in the offer process.
Align your training plan with DOL-recognized competencies
Your DS-2019 application requires a detailed training plan. Reference the O*NET occupation profile for Account Managers and Directors to frame your learning objectives in terms DOL recognizes, strengthening the designated sponsor's evaluation of your program design.

Find National Account Director JobsNational Account Director J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a National Account Director role?
Most National Account Directors apply under the J-1 Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you have a relevant degree plus at least one year of post-degree experience. Specialist applies to professionals with substantial expertise in a specialized field, such as enterprise sales or key account strategy, who may not have a directly related degree. Both categories require a structured training plan and a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor to issue your DS-2019.
Who is the actual visa sponsor for a J-1 National Account Director position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your hiring employer. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or CIEE issue the DS-2019 form and oversee program compliance. Your employer is the host organization. This distinction matters because the host employer must coordinate with the designated sponsor to establish and sign your training plan before you can be issued the J-1.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 exchange visitor at the director level?
Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. companies and roles that align with J-1 sponsorship at senior levels, including account leadership positions. Director-level hosting requires employers to commit to a formal training plan and work with a designated sponsor, so identifying companies already familiar with the J-1 host process is a practical starting point for your search.
Does the J-1 Trainee category have a time limit for National Account Directors?
Yes. The J-1 Trainee category allows a maximum of 18 months in the United States, with one possible extension up to that ceiling. The J-1 Specialist category carries an 18-month limit as well. Because National Account Director roles often involve multi-year account cycles and strategic planning, you and your host employer should plan project milestones and program objectives with this duration in mind from the start.
Can I negotiate a full-time permanent offer from a J-1 host employer?
Yes, but transitioning to a longer-term visa status after a J-1 placement requires separate immigration action. If you are subject to the two-year home-residency requirement, your host employer would need to pursue a waiver or wait out the requirement before sponsoring you for an H-1B or other employer-sponsored status. Clarifying this exposure before you accept a host placement avoids complications during future transition planning.
