Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Event Coordinator
Build a training plan before applying
Designated sponsors require a detailed training plan outlining the skills you'll develop on-site. Draft a week-by-week schedule covering event logistics, vendor coordination, and budget management before you approach any host employer.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility early
The Intern category applies if you're currently enrolled in a degree program. The Trainee category covers graduates with at least one year of event industry experience. Confirming which category fits your profile prevents a mismatched DS-2019 application.
Target employers with existing J-1 host agreements
Hotels, convention centers, and event management firms that have previously hosted J-1 trainees already have agreements with designated sponsors on file. Use Migrate Mate to filter for U.S. employers in the hospitality and events sector that align with J-1 sponsorship.
Verify your role meets specialty occupation standards
Not every event coordinator title qualifies. Your position must involve tasks that directly develop professional competencies, such as contract negotiation, program design, or multi-vendor logistics, not just on-site setup or administrative support.
Confirm the two-year home residency requirement upfront
Trainees from countries with exchange agreements or funded by their government may face a two-year home residency requirement after completing the program. Confirm your status with the designated sponsor before accepting an offer, since this affects future U.S. visa options.
Request a formal offer letter before DS-2019 issuance
Designated sponsors such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT will not issue a DS-2019 without a signed offer or acceptance letter from the host employer. Secure written confirmation of your role title, start date, and training objectives before initiating the sponsor application.

Find Event Coordinator JobsEvent Coordinator J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Event Coordinator roles?
Most Event Coordinator placements fall under the Trainee category if you've completed a relevant degree and have at least one year of professional experience in hospitality, communications, or event management. Current students in a degree program may qualify under the Intern category instead. The designated sponsor determines which category applies based on your background and the host employer's training plan.
Who is actually sponsoring the J-1 visa for an Event Coordinator position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or CIEE, not the employer. The employer is the host organization that provides the training environment. The designated sponsor issues the DS-2019 form, monitors program compliance, and serves as your point of contact throughout the exchange period.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Event Coordinator?
Hotels, convention centers, destination management companies, and corporate event firms are common host employers for J-1 Trainee placements in event coordination. Use Migrate Mate to search for U.S. employers in these sectors that have a track record of supporting international exchange visitors. Targeting organizations that have hosted J-1 participants before reduces friction during the sponsor application process.
Does the J-1 Trainee program cover all event coordination tasks?
No. The program must focus on skill development, so your training plan needs to emphasize substantive activities like vendor negotiations, program logistics, budget oversight, and stakeholder management. Tasks limited to room setup, data entry, or receptionist duties won't satisfy the program's training objectives, and the designated sponsor may reject a plan built around those activities.
Can a J-1 Event Coordinator trainee extend their program or switch employers?
Trainee programs can run up to 18 months, and extensions require approval from the designated sponsor before the current DS-2019 expires. Switching host employers mid-program is possible but requires the sponsor to issue a new or amended DS-2019 reflecting the change. Any gap in authorized training status can jeopardize the exchange visitor's standing, so changes must be coordinated through the sponsor in advance.
