COMPANY OVERVIEW:
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.
Overview:
Joby Aviation is seeking a motivated intern to support the technical program management (TPM) team this summer! Projects will primarily focus on the airframe but may grow to support other areas of the aircraft. As a TPM intern, you will primarily work with the design and manufacturing teams, as well as supply chain and testing teams, to identify bottlenecks, build should-cost models and develop framework-driven assessment tools to help realize operational efficiencies for the company. A successful candidate will be comfortable understanding technical discussions, developing strategic plans, leveraging analytical tools like Excel and Python, and communicating with a broad array of stakeholders. This role is an opportunity to own real cost-down initiatives from ideation through implementation and make a meaningful impact on Joby's S4 aircraft program.
- Start Date: May 2025 (flexible)
- Duration: 12+ weeks (Summer 2025, with potential extension into Fall)
- Location: On-site, Santa Cruz and Marina (Full-time, 40 hours per week)
- Eligibility: Open to rising juniors and above
- International Students: If applying with CPT authorization, ensure you can legally work 40 hours per week on-site before applying
Responsibilities:
- Support the airframe TPM team in driving cross-functional alignment across design, manufacturing, and supply chain to accelerate wing-level cost-down initiatives
- Build and maintain should-cost models and framework-driven assessment tools that quantify component-level cost drivers and surface high-leverage efficiency opportunities
- Develop and maintain detailed project schedules to track cost reduction initiatives from ideation through implementation, flagging critical path risks and downstream program implications
- Facilitate trade discussions between design and manufacturing teams to identify design-to-cost opportunities while seeking to maintain structural or performance requirements
- Coordinate with supply chain teams to benchmark supplier costs, identify leverage points, and communicate findings to program leadership
REQUIRED:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, Business, or a related field
- Heading into junior or senior year of undergraduate degree or above
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in a fast-paced environment
- Effective communication skills, both written and executive presentation
DESIRED:
- Familiarity with should-cost methodologies, financial frameworks, or operational efficiency analysis in complex manufacturing environments
- Familiar with Urban Air Mobility, eVTOL sector, or renewable energy technologies
- Direct project experience with hardware development or new product introduction
- Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, Smartsheet
RELOCATION ASSISTANCE: This position does not offer relocation assistance. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The pay range for undergraduate interns, which includes junior to senior level students, is $22.00 - $31.00/hour. The pay range for graduate interns with a Bachelor's, Master's, and/or Ph.D. degree in progress or completed is $5,550 - $7,800/month. Individual pay is determined by internship role, department, experience, job-related skills, and level of education.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Technical Program Manager
Frame your experience as a structured training objective
Your DS-2019 training plan must show skill development, not just job performance. Map your Technical Program Manager work history to specific competencies you'll build in the U.S., like cross-functional delivery frameworks or stakeholder alignment methods, before approaching any host employer.
Verify the Trainee category fits your career stage
The J-1 Trainee category requires a degree plus one year of experience abroad, or five years of experience without a degree. If you're still enrolled, the Intern category applies instead. Confirming this before outreach prevents mismatched applications that delay or derail placement.
Target host employers with existing J-1 infrastructure
Large technology firms and research-intensive organizations often have established relationships with designated J-1 sponsors like Cultural Vistas or AIPT. Prioritize employers in those networks because the host agreement and training plan approval process moves significantly faster when the compliance pathway already exists.
Search for roles using Migrate Mate to find aligned opportunities
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. Technical Program Manager positions by visa sponsorship compatibility. Identifying employers who have hosted J-1 participants before narrows your search to organizations already familiar with the DS-2019 co-sign process and training plan requirements.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement upfront
Some J-1 participants from certain countries or government-funded programs must return home for two years after program completion before changing status or applying for most immigrant or nonimmigrant visas. Confirm whether this requirement applies to you before accepting any host offer, since it affects your post-program options.
Get the 30-day program start window in writing from your sponsor
Your DS-2019 specifies a program start date, and you must enter the U.S. no earlier than 30 days before that date. Coordinate with both your designated sponsor and the host employer so your onboarding timeline is built around that window, not around the employer's standard start date preferences.

Find Technical Program Manager JobsTechnical Program Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Technical Program Manager role?
Most Technical Program Manager candidates qualify under the Trainee category if they hold a relevant degree plus at least one year of work experience outside the U.S., or five or more years of field experience without a degree. Current students completing a degree program may qualify under the Intern category instead. The Specialist category applies to candidates with expertise that is not easily transferable and does not fit Trainee criteria.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Technical Program Manager position?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or CIEE, not the hiring employer. The employer acts as a host organization and co-signs a training plan but does not issue the DS-2019 form or hold the sponsoring designation. You must work with a designated sponsor to obtain the DS-2019, which is required before you can apply for the J-1 visa at a U.S. consulate.
How do I find U.S. employers that are open to hosting J-1 Technical Program Managers?
Use Migrate Mate to search Technical Program Manager roles filtered by J-1 visa sponsorship compatibility. Employers who have previously hosted J-1 participants are more likely to understand the training plan and DS-2019 co-sign process. Technology companies, research institutions, and large engineering organizations are the most common host environments for this role category.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Technical Program Managers on J-1 visas?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement applies if your J-1 program was financed by your home government or the U.S. government, or if your home country skills list includes your occupation. Technical Program Manager is a specialized role that may appear on some country lists. You must determine whether this requirement applies before program entry, since it restricts your ability to change status or apply for H-1B or green card pathways afterward without a waiver.
What does the J-1 training plan need to include for a Technical Program Manager position?
The training plan, submitted on Form DS-7002, must outline the specific skills you will develop in the U.S. that are not available in your home country. For a Technical Program Manager, this typically includes structured exposure to specific methodologies, tools, or organizational frameworks. The host employer and designated sponsor both sign the plan, and it must demonstrate genuine training objectives rather than standard employment duties.
