Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Program Coordinator
Align your background to J-1 categories
Current students qualify under the Intern category; professionals within five years of graduation typically apply as Trainees. Map your career stage to the correct category before approaching any host employer, since misclassification can delay or void your DS-2019 issuance.
Build a training plan before employer outreach
Designated sponsors like Cultural Vistas and CIEE require a structured training plan detailing week-by-week learning objectives tied to program coordination. Draft this document in advance so prospective host employers understand exactly what the sponsorship arrangement commits them to.
Search for J-1-compatible roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Program Coordinator positions at U.S. organizations that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before. Targeting employers with prior host experience shortens negotiation time and reduces the risk of a host declining after an offer is extended.
Verify host employer eligibility with your sponsor
Not every organization can serve as a J-1 host. Your designated sponsor must approve the host employer before a DS-2019 is issued. Confirm your prospective employer meets the sponsor's site-visit and insurance requirements early, not after you've accepted an offer.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule upfront
Some Program Coordinator placements, particularly those funded by a government or involving skills on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, carry a two-year home-country residency requirement. Identify this before accepting a role, since it affects your ability to change status or apply for certain U.S. visas afterward.
Request DS-2019 issuance at least 30 days pre-start
Your designated sponsor needs time to review your training plan, verify host employer eligibility, and issue the DS-2019. Submitting documentation fewer than 30 days before your intended start date risks a delayed entry that your host employer may not accommodate.

Find Program Coordinator JobsProgram Coordinator J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Program Coordinator role?
It depends on your career stage. If you're a currently enrolled student or recent graduate, the Intern category applies. If you're a working professional within five years of graduation and seeking structured skill development, the Trainee category is the correct fit. Both require a formal training plan and a State Department-designated sponsor to issue your DS-2019.
Is the host employer my J-1 visa sponsor?
No. The host employer where you work as a Program Coordinator is not your visa sponsor. Your sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or CIEE, that reviews your training plan, approves your host placement, and issues the DS-2019 form. The host employer participates in the program but holds no sponsorship authority.
How do I find Program Coordinator roles open to J-1 exchange visitors?
Standard job boards rarely flag J-1 host willingness. Migrate Mate lets you search Program Coordinator positions at U.S. employers that have worked with J-1 exchange visitors, helping you focus your applications on organizations already familiar with training plan requirements, sponsor coordination, and the DS-2019 process.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Program Coordinator positions?
It can. The requirement applies if your exchange program is government-financed, if your home country's skills list includes program coordination or related fields, or if you received graduate medical training. Check the Exchange Visitor Skills List for your country and confirm your funding source with your designated sponsor before accepting a placement.
What does a J-1 training plan need to cover for a Program Coordinator role?
Your training plan, formalized on the DS-7002 form, must detail specific learning objectives tied to program coordination competencies such as stakeholder communication, event logistics, budget tracking, or grant administration. Generic descriptions of daily duties won't satisfy designated sponsor review. Your host employer signs the form, and your designated sponsor approves it before issuing the DS-2019.
