INTRODUCTION
As a Counseling Intern with our Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) Team, you will not only have the opportunity to observe and learn from our counselors with the AllHealth Network FACT team at our Wellness Center location, but also to get hands-on experience working with clients who need specialized care due to their criminal justice involvement and serious behavioral health symptoms. The ideal candidate will be interested in a forensic/criminal justice and mental health career.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of a Licensed Therapist, our interns will support the Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) Team by providing individual and group services hours to gain experience with assessments, treatment goals, and treatment plan development. Interns will work with seriously and persistently mentally ill clients who are criminal justice involved, including those released from custody awaiting competency restoration, awaiting trial, and those who are on probation. All interns will sit with clients on medication management appointments and certification appointments. Interns will therapeutically support clients when they appear in court. Interns will observe several different counselors in real-time conversations and interventions with the client and be given an opportunity to lead conversations themselves. Interns will provide community-based and office-based services such as case management, care navigation, behavioral health counseling, rapport building and goal development, de-escalation, skills building, care coordination, clinical interventions, and psychoeducation. Interns will also liaise with the court navigator and other 18th judicial district partners such as public defenders and probation officers. As with all internships, you will receive direct supervision from and be in daily contact with your internship supervisor.
AllHealth Network does not allow any video recordings for school assignments. Students who have this academic requirement are encouraged to apply elsewhere.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Forensic Psychologist
Align your credentials with U.S. licensure expectations
Most forensic psychology host sites expect documented training in evidence-based assessment, court testimony, or offender rehabilitation. Translate your foreign credentials into U.S.-recognizable equivalencies before outreach, since host sites evaluate you independently of the J-1 sponsor.
Target institutions with existing J-1 host agreements
State forensic hospitals, federal Bureau of Prisons facilities, university-based forensic training clinics, and academic medical centers routinely host J-1 Research Scholars. Focus your search on organizations already embedded in a designated sponsor's network rather than approaching general employers cold.
Search Migrate Mate to surface J-1-aligned roles
Forensic psychology positions with J-1-compatible host employers are scattered across sectors. Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers and openings specifically aligned with J-1 sponsorship, filtering by role type to find research, clinical, or correctional placements.
Clarify the 2-year home residency requirement early
The J-1 Research Scholar and Specialist categories frequently trigger the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your funding source or country of origin subjects you to this requirement before signing any host site agreement.
Confirm your program objective matches the DS-2019 category
Research Scholars must conduct research, observe, or consult rather than deliver direct clinical services as their primary activity. If your role centers on treatment provision rather than research or training, your sponsor may classify you under Specialist instead, which carries different eligibility criteria.
Verify prevailing wage compliance with your host employer
While J-1 is not an employer-sponsored visa, host sites in clinical or government settings may have internal pay equity obligations. Cross-check the offered compensation against published DOL wage data using the OFLC Wage Search to ensure the role meets professional standards before accepting.

Find Forensic Psychologist JobsForensic Psychologist J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Forensic Psychologist?
Most forensic psychologists enter on the Research Scholar or Specialist category, depending on their primary activity at the host site. Research Scholar applies when your work centers on psychological research, academic training, or consultation in forensic settings. Specialist applies to professionals with specialized expertise in forensic assessment or policy who are not conducting formal academic research. Students still completing doctoral training may qualify under the Intern category if enrolled in a degree program.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Forensic Psychologist?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Entities such as IIE, CIEE, Cultural Vistas, and university exchange offices issue the DS-2019 form that authorizes your J-1 status. Your host site, which might be a forensic hospital, research institute, or federal agency, is the placement location. The host and the sponsor are separate entities with separate obligations under the J-1 program regulations.
Does the J-1 visa have an annual cap or lottery for Forensic Psychologists?
No. The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program carries no annual numerical cap and no lottery selection process, unlike the H-1B. You can apply and begin your exchange program at any point in the year, provided your designated sponsor approves your program and your host site is ready to receive you. Processing timelines vary by sponsor organization and consulate, but cap exhaustion is not a factor.
How do I find U.S. employers that host J-1 Forensic Psychologists?
Use Migrate Mate to search for U.S. employers and open roles aligned with J-1 sponsorship in psychology and forensic settings. Host sites that have previously worked with J-1 exchange visitors, including state forensic evaluation units, university psychology departments, and federal correctional research programs, are more likely to understand the DS-2019 process and the designated sponsor relationship.
Will the two-year home residency requirement affect my future U.S. visa options?
Possibly, and it's one of the most consequential details for forensic psychology exchange visitors to resolve before arriving. If you received government funding from your home country or the U.S., or if your home country is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, you may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). This bars you from obtaining H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visa status until you either complete the two years abroad or obtain a waiver through USCIS.
