J-1 Visa Poker Dealer Jobs
Poker Dealer positions in the U.S. typically qualify for J-1 sponsorship under the Trainee or Intern program categories, placing you with a host casino or gaming operation while a State Department-designated sponsor organization issues your DS-2019 and oversees your training plan. Securing sponsorship requires a structured program agreement between the host employer and the sponsor.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Poker Dealer
Document your dealing credentials before applying
Gather proof of formal dealer school training, casino work history, or gaming licensure from your home country. U.S. host employers and sponsor organizations treat a documented training background as evidence your J-1 program has clear educational objectives.
Target casinos with existing J-1 host agreements
Not every casino has worked with a State Department-designated sponsor before. Ask hiring managers directly whether the property has an active host organization relationship, because establishing a new one adds months to your timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned poker dealer roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. gaming employers and open positions that align with J-1 Trainee or Intern program requirements, so you're applying to hosts already familiar with the DS-2019 process and structured training plans.
Confirm your program category fits your career stage
The Intern category covers current hospitality or gaming students and recent graduates within 12 months of degree completion. The Trainee category suits professionals with at least one year of post-degree work experience. Applying under the wrong category delays sponsor approval.
Negotiate a written training plan before the DS-2019 is issued
Your sponsor organization, such as CIEE or Cultural Vistas, requires a formal training plan signed by the host employer before issuing your DS-2019. Lock down that document early, as revisions after sponsor submission restart the review clock.
Verify your state gaming license eligibility as a J-1 holder
Most U.S. states require casino dealers to hold a state-issued gaming license. Some state gaming control boards impose additional requirements on J-1 visa holders, so confirm eligibility with the relevant state authority before your program start date.

Find Poker Dealer JobsPoker Dealer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a poker dealer role?
Most poker dealer placements fall under the J-1 Trainee category, which is designed for foreign nationals with at least one year of post-degree professional experience in hospitality or gaming. Current students or recent graduates within 12 months of completing a hospitality or gaming program may qualify under the Intern category instead. The host casino and sponsor organization jointly determine which category applies based on your background.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a poker dealer?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the casino itself. Designated sponsors like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT issue your DS-2019, create and monitor your training plan, and handle compliance reporting. The casino where you deal is your host employer, responsible for your day-to-day work and training activities, but it is not your official visa sponsor.
How do I find host casinos that work with J-1 sponsors?
Search Migrate Mate to identify gaming employers and open poker dealer roles that align with J-1 program requirements. Not every casino has an established relationship with a designated sponsor organization, so targeting hosts already familiar with the DS-2019 process and training plan requirements significantly reduces your setup time and avoids delays from scratch negotiations.
Does the J-1 two-year home residency requirement apply to poker dealers?
It may. The two-year home-country physical presence requirement applies to J-1 participants whose programs are funded by their home government or the U.S. government, or whose skills are listed on their home country's skills shortage list. Your designated sponsor reviews your specific situation before issuing the DS-2019. If the requirement applies, you must return home for two years before changing to most other U.S. visa statuses.
Can I work in a poker room before my state gaming license arrives?
No. U.S. state gaming regulations require a valid gaming license before you deal at a licensed table, and most states process applications over several weeks. Your J-1 program start date and your license approval date both need to align with your host casino's staffing schedule. Confirm the state gaming control board's processing timeline for J-1 visa holders with your host employer before your program begins.
