Align your training plan with hospitality management
Your DS-2019 requires a detailed training plan tied to your field. Document your restaurant management coursework or prior supervisory experience in food service so the designated sponsor can map it to the Trainee or Intern category requirements.
Verify your program category before applying
If you're a current hospitality student, the J-1 Intern category applies. If you've graduated and have relevant work experience, you qualify under Trainee. Applying under the wrong category will stall your DS-2019 issuance, so confirm your status upfront.
Target host employers with established training structures
Restaurant groups running formal management development programs are easier to place in J-1 arrangements because they already have documented training rotations. Multi-unit operators and hotel food and beverage departments are strong targets for your search on Migrate Mate.
Clarify the 2-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants are subject to a 2-year home-country residency requirement before changing to certain other visa statuses. Check your DS-2019 and confirm with your designated sponsor whether your country and funding source trigger this obligation before accepting an offer.
Confirm your host employer understands the DS-2019 process
Many independent restaurant operators have never hosted a J-1 participant and may assume they are the visa sponsor. Clarify that the DS-2019 is issued by a State Department-designated organization, not the employer, so the offer letter and training plan are prepared correctly.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for J-1 compatible roles
Restaurant Assistant Manager roles that explicitly accommodate J-1 participants are a smaller subset of the market. Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers whose roles align with J-1 Trainee and Intern program categories in hospitality and food service management.

Find Restaurant Assistant Manager JobsRestaurant Assistant Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Restaurant Assistant Manager roles?
The J-1 Trainee category fits most candidates who have graduated and have at least one year of relevant hospitality or food service experience. If you are still enrolled in a hospitality management program, the J-1 Intern category applies instead. Your designated sponsor organization, not your host employer, determines your category and issues the DS-2019 form that authorizes your exchange visitor status.
Who actually sponsors a J-1 visa for a restaurant management position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the restaurant that hires you. That restaurant is your host employer. The designated sponsor reviews your qualifications, approves your training plan, issues the DS-2019, and monitors your program compliance throughout your placement.
How can I find Restaurant Assistant Manager roles that work with J-1 sponsorship?
Most job listings do not explicitly state J-1 compatibility because the visa arrangement is organized through a designated sponsor rather than the employer's HR department. Migrate Mate surfaces U.S. employers and Restaurant Assistant Manager roles aligned with J-1 Trainee and Intern programs, making it faster to identify host employers who understand the exchange visitor process.
Can a restaurant directly sponsor my J-1 visa without a designated organization?
No. Only organizations approved by the U.S. Department of State can issue DS-2019 forms and act as J-1 sponsors. A restaurant hiring you as a host employer cannot sponsor the visa on its own. The host employer works alongside the designated sponsor, signs the training plan, and provides the work environment, but the sponsor organization holds legal responsibility for the program.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement affect Restaurant Assistant Manager J-1 participants?
It can. The requirement applies based on your country of nationality, whether your exchange was government-funded, and whether your field appears on the State Department's skills list. If it applies, you must reside in your home country for two years before obtaining an H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visa. Confirm with your designated sponsor before signing an offer so you understand your post-program options.
