Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Production Technician
Align your training plan to SOC codes
Your J-1 training plan must map to a recognized occupational category. Production Technician roles typically fall under SOC 51-9199. Pull the O*NET profile for that code and match your program objectives to listed tasks and tools.
Document hands-on technical credentials before applying
Host employers reviewing Trainee applications want proof of relevant technical training, not just a degree. Gather certifications, equipment qualifications, and any factory or lab practicum records before outreach begins.
Search Migrate Mate to find host employers open to J-1 exchange visitors
Most production facilities don't advertise J-1 availability on standard job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter for U.S. employers in manufacturing and industrial sectors that have hosted exchange visitors in Production Technician or adjacent roles.
Confirm the host employer's E-Verify enrollment early
J-1 Trainees and Interns working in production environments often trigger E-Verify requirements. Ask any prospective host employer to confirm enrollment before your DS-2019 application moves forward, so compliance issues don't delay your start date.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee status when approaching sponsors
Intern status requires current enrollment in a degree program. If you've graduated, you must apply as a Trainee, which requires at least one year of relevant work experience. Misclassifying your category stalls the DS-2019 issuance process.
Verify prevailing wage compliance before signing your offer
Your host employer isn't required to file an LCA, but your compensation still can't undercut the going rate for the role. Cross-check your offered wage against the OFLC Wage Search for your specific occupation and work location.

Find Production Technician JobsProduction Technician J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Production Technician role?
It depends on where you are in your career. Current students in a technical or engineering program typically qualify under the Intern category. Graduates with at least one year of relevant production or manufacturing experience qualify under the Trainee category. Both require a structured training plan and a DS-2019 issued by a State Department-designated sponsor, not the employer itself.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if I'm placed at a manufacturing facility?
The manufacturing facility is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. Your legal sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT that reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019, and monitors your program compliance. The employer hosts you and funds the placement, but the designated sponsor holds the sponsorship relationship with the State Department.
Does a J-1 Production Technician placement come with a two-year home residency requirement?
It can. The two-year home-country physical presence requirement applies when your exchange program is funded by your home government or the U.S. government, or when your skill area appears on your country's Exchange Visitor Skills List. Production and manufacturing skills appear on that list for many countries. Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before accepting a placement, since the requirement affects future U.S. visa eligibility.
How do I find U.S. production facilities that are open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors?
Most manufacturing employers don't advertise J-1 availability, which makes standard job boards unreliable for this search. Migrate Mate lets you filter for U.S. employers in industrial and production sectors that have hosted exchange visitors in relevant roles, giving you a targeted list instead of a cold-outreach guessing game.
What does a J-1 training plan need to include for a Production Technician position?
Your training plan, typically documented on Form DS-7002, must outline specific skills you'll develop, the equipment or processes you'll work with, supervision arrangements, and a week-by-week or phase-by-phase schedule. Vague plans listing only 'general manufacturing experience' are routinely rejected by designated sponsors. Tie each phase to measurable technical competencies drawn from the O*NET profile for your occupation code.
