J-1 Visa Robotics Jobs
Robotics professionals and students can pursue U.S. placements through J-1 visa sponsorship under the Trainee or Research Scholar category, depending on experience level. Designated sponsor organizations issue the DS-2019 and oversee your training plan, while your host employer provides the hands-on technical environment.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Robotics
Frame your training plan around measurable milestones
Designated sponsors require a detailed training plan showing skill progression, not just a job description. Map your robotics objectives to specific phases, such as controls integration in month one and autonomous systems testing by month three.
Distinguish Trainee from Research Scholar before applying
Trainee status fits industry placements for professionals with under five years of post-degree experience. Research Scholar applies if your robotics work is conducted at a university or research institute with a primary academic or investigative purpose.
Target host employers with existing J-1 host agreements
Employers that have hosted J-1 participants before already understand the training plan, DS-2019, and sponsor oversight process. Use Migrate Mate to filter for robotics roles at companies familiar with exchange visitor placements.
Verify your home-residency requirement before accepting an offer
Some robotics placements funded by government agencies trigger the two-year home-residency requirement under INA 212(e). Confirm your funding source with your designated sponsor before signing an offer to avoid complications with future H-1B or green card filings.
Align your DS-2019 start date with your host employer's onboarding
Your J-1 program cannot begin before the DS-2019 start date, and you can only enter the U.S. 30 days in advance. Coordinate onboarding paperwork with both your designated sponsor and your host employer's HR team simultaneously, not sequentially.
Document robotics-specific skills to satisfy STEM classification
Sponsors classifying your placement under engineering or physical sciences require evidence that your role involves specialized technical knowledge. Compile credentials, project portfolios, or academic transcripts showing hands-on robotics, mechatronics, or autonomous systems experience before submitting your application.

Find Robotics JobsRobotics J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to robotics professionals?
It depends on your career stage and placement setting. Current students or recent graduates entering industry roles typically qualify under the Intern or Trainee category. Robotics researchers placed at universities, national labs, or research institutes usually apply under Research Scholar or Short-Term Scholar. The host organization type and your level of post-degree experience are the two deciding factors your designated sponsor will evaluate.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a robotics position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as IIE, CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, not your host employer. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, approves your training plan, and monitors compliance throughout your program. Your host employer in robotics provides the physical workplace and supervises day-to-day technical work, but holds no formal sponsorship role under State Department rules.
How do I find robotics host employers that are open to J-1 participants?
Search for robotics and automation roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces U.S. employers and positions aligned with exchange visitor placements. Look specifically for host organizations that have worked with designated sponsors before, since they already understand the DS-2019 process, training plan requirements, and 30-day program entry rules. Familiarity with J-1 compliance significantly reduces delays between your offer and program approval.
Does a robotics J-1 placement trigger the two-year home-residency requirement?
It can. If your placement is funded by the U.S. government, your home country's government, or an international organization, INA 212(e) imposes a two-year home-residency requirement before you can change to H-1B or apply for a green card. Robotics researchers at federally funded labs or government-sponsored institutes should verify their funding source with their designated sponsor early in the process, before accepting an offer.
Can a robotics Trainee extend their J-1 program, and what are the limits?
Trainees in fields like robotics and engineering can participate for up to 18 months, with a possible 6-month extension for specialized programs, bringing the maximum to 18 months total under most circumstances. Extensions require your designated sponsor's approval and an updated training plan showing new or advanced objectives. You cannot simply roll over your existing plan; the extension must demonstrate genuine skill progression beyond your original program scope.
