J-1 Visa Aerospace Jobs
Aerospace roles in the U.S. typically fit the J-1 Trainee or Research Scholar category, depending on your career stage. Both require a designated State Department sponsor to issue your DS-2019. Finding a host employer willing to work within that structure is the first step toward sponsorship.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Aerospace
Document your aerospace training plan early
Your designated sponsor needs a detailed training plan before issuing the DS-2019. Map your engineering or research objectives to specific tasks, equipment, and supervisors at the host site. Vague plans are the most common cause of delays.
Target aerospace employers with federal contracts
Defense contractors and NASA subcontractors routinely host international trainees because their compliance frameworks already handle security clearance checks and international personnel. Focus your search on employers in that segment of the industry.
Search J-1-compatible roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter aerospace positions at U.S. employers open to exchange visitor arrangements. It surfaces roles where the host is already familiar with the J-1 structure, saving you from cold-pitching employers who have no prior experience with it.
Clarify home-residency requirement status upfront
Aerospace Trainee and Research Scholar participants whose funding comes from a government or international organization may be subject to the two-year home-country residency requirement after the program. Confirm your status with your sponsor before accepting any offer.
Align your visa category to your career stage
If you're a current student or recent graduate in an aerospace engineering program, the Intern category applies. If you've been working in the field for at least one year post-degree, you qualify as a Trainee. Choosing the wrong category forces a restart.
Verify the host employer's DS-7002 readiness
The Training and Internship Placement Plan (DS-7002) must be signed by both the host employer and the designated sponsor. Confirm the employer has completed this form before with other J-1 trainees. First-time hosts often underestimate the paperwork timeline.

Find Aerospace JobsAerospace J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits aerospace professionals?
It depends on your career stage. Current students or recent graduates in aerospace engineering typically fall under the Intern category, which requires active enrollment or graduation within the past 12 months. Professionals with at least one year of post-degree aerospace work experience qualify as Trainees. Senior researchers affiliated with a university or research institute may qualify as Research Scholars.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa in an aerospace role?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as IIE, CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT. They issue your DS-2019 and are legally responsible for your program compliance. The aerospace company where you work is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. These are two separate entities with separate responsibilities.
How do I find aerospace employers open to hosting J-1 trainees?
Most aerospace employers don't advertise J-1 compatibility in job postings, which makes a targeted search difficult through general job boards. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface U.S. employers and roles where international exchange visitor arrangements are a realistic option, letting you focus your outreach on employers already familiar with the host structure.
Does aerospace work trigger the two-year home-residency requirement?
Not automatically. The two-year home-country residency requirement (under INA Section 212(e)) applies when your program is government-funded, your home country has identified your field as in shortage, or you received a government scholarship. Aerospace is commonly listed in shortage fields by certain countries, so check your J-1 visa stamp for a 212(e) notation and confirm with your designated sponsor before planning any post-program steps.
Can a J-1 Trainee in aerospace work for more than one host employer?
Only if your designated sponsor approves the arrangement in advance and the DS-7002 training plan reflects both placements. Switching host employers mid-program without sponsor approval violates your J-1 status. Any change to your host site, role, or training objectives must be documented and signed off by your sponsor before the change takes effect.
