- Test new designs on the bench and in-system to ensure function and performance
What We’re Looking For:
- Pursuing a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- Hands-on aptitude - able to dive-in and troubleshoot a variety of system issues across multiple engineering disciplines
- Experience with typical lab equipment and tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, soldering equipment)
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Passionate about electrical engineering and making great designs
What We’d Love To See:

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Electrical Engineer
Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
Gather transcripts, degree evaluations, and professional certifications before applying. U.S. employers evaluating J-1 visa Trainee applicants expect documented proof that your electrical engineering background matches the specific training program objectives outlined in the DS-2019 Training Plan.
Verify your program category before applying
Current students pursuing practical experience typically qualify under the J-1 Intern category, while degree-holding early-career engineers apply as Trainees. Senior researchers at universities or national labs may qualify under Research Scholar. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019 issuance.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-compatible engineering roles
Not every employer is set up to host a J-1 exchange visitor. Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. engineering employers whose hiring patterns indicate experience with international exchange programs, so you target roles where sponsorship is a realistic outcome.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year requirement
If your J-1 funding comes from your home government or a U.S. government agency, or if your field appears on the Skills List published by your home country, you may face a two-year home residency requirement before changing to another visa status. Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Request a detailed Training Plan from your host employer
The DS-7002 Training Plan must specify measurable learning objectives, supervision arrangements, and phase-by-phase skill development for electrical engineering tasks. Vague or generic plans are flagged by designated sponsors and can stall your visa processing before it begins.
Confirm the host employer's prior J-1 experience during offer negotiations
Ask directly whether the engineering team has hosted J-1 Trainees or Research Scholars before. Employers unfamiliar with the DS-2019 issuance process, designated sponsor requirements, or monthly reporting obligations often create delays after the offer is signed.
Electrical Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to electrical engineers?
It depends on your career stage. If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, the J-1 Intern category covers hands-on training related to your field of study. If you've already completed your degree, you apply as a J-1 Trainee. Engineers conducting academic or institutional research at a university or national laboratory may qualify under the Research Scholar category instead.
Who actually sponsors a J-1 visa for an electrical engineering role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the engineering employer. Organizations such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT issue your DS-2019 form and are legally responsible for program compliance. Your host employer provides the training environment and workplace, but they are not the designated sponsor and do not control the DS-2019 process.
How do I find U.S. engineering employers open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors?
Most job boards don't filter by J-1 compatibility, so you often apply without knowing whether the employer understands the host requirements. Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. engineering roles at employers whose international hiring history suggests familiarity with exchange visitor programs, which makes your outreach more efficient and productive.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect electrical engineers?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement applies if your J-1 participation is funded by your home country's government, funded by USAID or another U.S. government agency, or if your occupation appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List published by your home country. Electrical engineering sometimes appears on these lists depending on your country of origin. Your designated sponsor can confirm whether the requirement applies to you before you sign an offer.
What does the DS-7002 Training Plan need to include for an engineering role?
The DS-7002 must document phase-by-phase learning objectives, the specific electrical engineering competencies you'll develop, the name and qualifications of your direct supervisor, and a timeline for each training phase. Generic descriptions of daily tasks aren't sufficient. Designated sponsors review this document carefully, and weak or vague Training Plans are a leading reason DS-2019 issuance is delayed or denied for Trainee applicants.
