Machine Learning Intern Jobs in Indiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a machine learning intern in Indiana?
Machine learning internships in Indiana require no state-issued license or certification. Most Indiana employers expect active enrollment in a computer science, data science, statistics, or electrical engineering program at a university such as Purdue, Indiana University, or Notre Dame. Building a portfolio of applied projects on public datasets, contributing to open-source repositories, and completing coursework in linear algebra, probability, and neural networks are the concrete steps that move an Indiana applicant to the interview stage.
Which companies hire machine learning interns in Indiana?
Employers hiring machine learning interns in Indiana right now include Amentum, Aptiv, and Dauch, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Indiana's life sciences corridor and its growing fintech presence in Indianapolis mean internship projects often center on drug discovery modeling, fraud detection, and supply chain optimization.
Which Indiana cities have the most machine learning intern jobs?
Indianapolis, Lafayette, and Indiana account for the most machine learning intern openings in Indiana. Indianapolis anchors the list as the state's commercial hub, home to major life sciences companies and technology firms, while Bloomington and West Lafayette draw heavily from Indiana University and Purdue University respectively, where research labs and on-campus industry partnerships generate a consistent pipeline of intern roles.
Are there remote machine learning intern jobs in Indiana?
Yes, and more than most fields, since machine learning intern work is primarily computational and can be done from any location with a reliable development environment. About 14% of machine learning intern openings tied to Indiana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how naturally the role transfers to distributed teams. Model training, data preprocessing, and research tasks are the most commonly remote components, while on-site internships tend to involve proprietary hardware or regulated data environments.
How can I get hired as a machine learning intern in Indiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to structured summer internship programs at Indiana-based employers before completing a formal ML course sequence. Eli Lilly and Salesforce both run early-career and new-grad technical internship cohorts that accept candidates with strong fundamentals even without prior industry experience. Indiana University and Purdue also host undergraduate research assistant positions in their AI and data science labs, which function as a first ML role. A project portfolio demonstrating end-to-end model development, even on public datasets, consistently outweighs a blank resume for Indiana hiring managers screening entry-level applicants.
