Mid Level Materials Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level materials engineer job?
Position your experience around ownership and outcomes: highlight projects where you led material selection, resolved failure analyses, or improved process yield without heavy supervision. Tailor your resume to show depth in a specific material class or industry application, and quantify your impact where possible. Employers at this level want evidence that you can operate independently and deliver results, not just assist.
Which companies hire mid level materials engineers?
Companies hiring mid level materials engineers right now include Terracon Consultants, D.H. Pace Company, and Apple, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level covers manufacturers, aerospace and defense contractors, medical device firms, and energy companies that need engineers who can manage active development programs with limited supervision.
Are there remote mid level materials engineer jobs?
Yes, though most roles involve some lab or plant access. About 6% of mid level materials engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, concentrated in roles focused on specifications, supplier qualification, documentation, and technical review rather than hands-on testing. On-site roles remain common wherever physical characterization or production floor work is core to the position.
How do I move up to a mid level materials engineer role?
Progression from entry level to mid level comes from accumulating project ownership over time: moving from supporting tasks to leading material evaluations, running failure investigations independently, and seeing programs through from concept to qualification. Building depth in a specific material system or process, documenting measurable outcomes, and demonstrating that your judgment can be trusted without constant oversight are what distinguish mid level candidates from junior engineers.
Which industries hire the most mid level materials engineers?
Mid Level materials engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Manufacturing, and Electronics & Hardware, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive hiring at this level because their development cycles require engineers who can manage material decisions across multiple concurrent programs, interface directly with suppliers, and support both design and production teams without close supervision.
