What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in aerospace jobs.
- Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering
- Proficiency in CAD software such as CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks
- Experience with systems engineering or model-based systems engineering practices
- Active or eligible security clearance for defense and government roles
- Familiarity with FAA regulations, MIL-SPEC standards, or DO-178C guidelines
- Hands-on experience with structural analysis, CFD, or propulsion testing
Tips for Your Aerospace Job Search
Tailor your resume to clearance requirements
Many aerospace roles require or strongly prefer a security clearance. If you hold one, list the level and adjudication date prominently near the top of your resume. Hiring managers filter on this before reviewing technical skills.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists aerospace openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight model-based design tools explicitly
Aerospace employers scan for specific software like CATIA, ANSYS, MATLAB, and Simulink. List each tool you've used and pair it with a project or output, not just a checkbox. Generic 'CAD experience' rarely makes the cut.
Target openings by contract vehicle type
Defense-focused roles often sit under specific government contract vehicles like IDIQ or SBIR programs. Understanding whether a role is on a cost-plus or fixed-price contract helps you tailor your interview answers around schedule risk and budget constraints.
Prepare a technical portfolio before interviews
Aerospace hiring panels often include a chief engineer or systems lead who expects design artifacts. Bring declassified or publicly releasable samples of trade studies, failure mode analyses, or test reports to reference during technical rounds.
Negotiate start date around facility access timelines
If an offer is contingent on a background investigation or facility badging, confirm how long that process typically takes before accepting. Your actual first day on full duties can trail your official start date by several weeks.
Aerospace Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most aerospaces?
The companies hiring the most aerospaces right now include Joby Aviation, Honeywell Aerospace, and Shield AI, with the largest share of openings in California, Arizona, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in defense programs and commercial launch, so roles at these employers tend to move quickly once posted.
How many aerospace jobs are remote?
About 12% of aerospace openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most technical fields due to classified work and hands-on hardware requirements. Sub-areas most likely to offer remote flexibility include systems modeling, software avionics, data analysis, and mission planning roles that don't require physical access to test facilities or secure facilities.
How do you become an aerospace engineer?
Start with a bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Build hands-on experience through internships, co-ops, or university rocketry and SAE Aero Design teams. Develop proficiency in at least one industry-standard analysis or design tool. Entry-level roles typically require a strong GPA, demonstrated project experience, and the ability to obtain a security clearance if the employer works on defense contracts.
How do you get hired in aerospace with little experience?
Focus your applications on entry-level test technician, manufacturing engineer, or sustaining engineering roles, which typically require less design experience than new development positions. Competitive candidates with limited work history emphasize senior capstone projects, wind tunnel or lab coursework, and involvement in AIAA student chapters. Internships at regional aerospace suppliers are often easier to land than roles at major primes and lead directly to full-time offers.
What does the aerospace interview process look like?
Most aerospace interviews follow a structured sequence: an initial recruiter screen focused on background and clearance eligibility, a technical phone or video round with an engineering lead covering fundamentals in your discipline, and an on-site or virtual panel that includes a design or analysis exercise. Defense employers often add a program-specific discussion about mission requirements. Final offers are sometimes conditional on passing a background investigation.
Where can I find and apply to aerospace jobs?
You can find and apply to aerospace jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search by role, location, or specialization to narrow the listings, then apply directly to each position that fits. No detours to other platforms are needed.
