INTRODUCTION
The Communications Associate II will design and lead communication efforts for a designated division, department, or center and oversee communications and marketing strategies and tactics to support strategic goals. The Communications Associate II will develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to support the designated area's strategic priorities.
We are seeking a dynamic Communications Associate II to help lead the day-to-day internal communications channel strategy, campaign planning, and stakeholder engagement across divisions and non-academic departments, and to oversee internal communications operations. The ideal candidate will translate the internal communications strategic direction into implementable plans and measurable outcomes, operating at the tactical-strategic intersection. This role will be accountable for delivery, outcomes, and metrics of internal communication efforts.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as the internal communications lead for a division, department or center.
- Develop an internal communications plan for the designated area’s strategic plan including relevant reports, events, memos, and websites.
- Plan, create, oversee, and edit internal communications strategies to keep faculty, staff, and students informed about important initiatives, goals, and events.
- Ensure the efficiency and efficacy of communications between school leadership and faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders.
- Follow established university branding standards in all communications.
- Liaise with members of related communication teams.
- Write clear and effective content for audiences.
- Pivot writing styles based on the format, message, audience, and purpose.
- Lead the development of a cohesive internal communications strategy that builds community and positions the designated area as a vital part of the university.
- Develop and maintain an internal communications calendar, ensuring efficient coordination of communications activities.
- Manage print and digital collateral.
- Curate content from websites, social media, and news media to amplify the strategic plan across multiple platforms.
- Advise and work with the communications team to write remarks and messages for leadership.
- Plan and create templates for internal crisis communications announcements, e.g. building closures and other emergencies.
- Edit content and manage editors for internal websites and SharePoint sites.
- Contract and manage external vendors as needed.
- Interact with communications experts across the university on various issues and best practices.
- Execute strategies for cross-divisional communications efforts with other communications offices.
- Ensure consistent use of university brand standards across all projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the duties described above:
- Protect JHU’s investment in new tools and channels: provide shared best practices, templates, training, and governance that delivers operational cost-savings through efficiency and consolidation.
- Provide change management during JHU’s digital transformation: reduce resistance to policy changes and new initiatives while ensuring one JHU voice, supporting shared strategic priorities, and mitigating reputational risk.
- Collaborate with Issues Management team, Content team, Public Safety, Student Affairs, Finance & Administration, and HR, as well as communication leads across divisions to ensure institutional alignment on messaging priorities and platform access.
- Own third-party vendor relationships that support digital internal communication tools and onboard university employees across divisions on those tools.
- Support the AVP with producing strategy documents, road maps, processes, and reports to align with the Ten for One mission and the employee value proposition.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in related field.
- Five years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A passion for technology, a high comfort level for learning new technology, and the ability to inspire others to embrace technology.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.
- Proficient in Staffbase, Mailchimp, RAVE, database management, Google Analytics, web publishing tools, WordPress, Drupal, Microsoft Office 365.

Starting Salary Range: $73,300 - $128,300 Annually (Commensurate w/exp.)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EQUIVALENCY
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
