Tips for Your Media Relations Manager Job Search
Tailor your resume to earned media
Hiring managers for media relations manager roles want proof of placements, not just duties. List specific outlets you've secured coverage in, the stories you pitched, and measurable outcomes like pickup volume or share of voice shifts.
Highlight crisis communications experience clearly
Many job listings for media relations managers call out crisis or issues management as a required skill. Dedicate a short section or bullet cluster to situations where you managed rapid-response media, controlled narratives under pressure, or coordinated spokesperson prep.
Filter openings by sector before you apply
Media relations work varies sharply between a hospital system, a tech startup, and a federal agency. Target roles in sectors where your existing media relationships and subject-matter fluency are strongest, since hiring managers often look for journalists already on your contact list.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists media relations manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a portfolio of media pitches and clips
Unlike most management roles, media relations managers are often asked to share work samples. Bring three to five pitch examples alongside resulting coverage, and be ready to explain why each story angle worked for that particular outlet and audience.
Negotiate scope, not just title, in final rounds
Media relations manager roles differ widely in whether you own external agency relationships, have a direct budget for events or press trips, or report into communications versus marketing. Clarify those dimensions before accepting an offer so your authority matches your accountability.
Media Relations Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most media relations managers?
The companies hiring the most media relations managers right now include DLR, Kennesaw State University, and Live Nation, with the largest share of openings in New York, Texas, and Georgia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is particularly concentrated in healthcare systems, large technology companies, and nonprofit organizations with active advocacy or fundraising missions.
How many media relations manager jobs are remote?
About 29% of media relations manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible senior communications roles in the market. Sub-specializations focused on digital PR, technology sector communications, and national advocacy campaigns tend to offer the highest share of fully remote arrangements.
How do you become a media relations manager?
Most media relations managers begin in entry-level PR coordinator or communications assistant roles, building a portfolio of media pitches and earned placements over several years. Developing a beat-specific journalist contact list, taking on crisis communications projects early, and moving into a senior specialist role before stepping into management are the most common steps. Formal credentials in public relations, such as the APR designation, can strengthen your candidacy for senior roles.
Can you get hired as a media relations manager without direct management experience?
Yes, especially at smaller organizations or nonprofits where the role is structured as an individual contributor despite the manager title. Employers hiring for these positions often prioritize a demonstrated record of media placements and strong journalist relationships over formal people-management history. Framing any experience coordinating agencies, interns, or cross-functional communications projects helps close that gap on your resume.
What does the media relations manager interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a phone or video screen focused on your media placement history and communications philosophy, followed by a panel interview with senior communications, marketing, or executive leadership. Many employers include a written exercise, such as drafting a press release or pitching a story angle from a provided brief. Final rounds often involve a conversation with the executive or spokesperson you would support directly.
Where can I find and apply to media relations manager jobs?
You can find and apply to media relations manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, sector focus, and preferred location, then apply directly to each position that fits.
