Tips for Your Newscast Producer Job Search
Tailor your resume to the rundown
Newscast producers live by the rundown, so your resume should reflect that fluency. List the story types you've produced, the formats you've managed, and the broadcast software you know. Hiring managers scan for ENPS, iNEWS, or Dalet experience before reading anything else.
Show your reel before they ask
Attach a two-to-three minute highlight reel to every application before the employer requests one. Include a mix of live breaking coverage and a planned newscast. Producers who front-load their reel with a strong breaking-news segment move faster through the review process.
Target market size strategically when applying
If you're coming from a small market, apply to mid-size markets rather than jumping straight to major metros. Employers in markets ranked 25 to 50 often prefer candidates with hands-on producing experience over those with big-market internships and no lead producer credits.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists newscast producer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a writing test before interviews
Most newscast producer interviews include a timed writing exercise covering script rewrites, story teases, or a mock rundown. Practice writing to time under 30 seconds per story. Stations often eliminate candidates at this stage before any conversation with a news director.
Follow up with a news director directly
After applying, a brief email to the news director referencing a recent story or format change at their station signals genuine interest. Keep it under four sentences. News directors notice candidates who demonstrate they actually watch the product, not just those who submit a generic application.
Newscast Producer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How many newscast producer jobs are remote?
About 0% of newscast producer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the live and time-sensitive nature of broadcast news production. Digital and streaming news operations offer the most remote flexibility, while roles tied to live linear broadcasts at local television stations almost always require on-site presence.
How do you become a newscast producer?
You become a newscast producer by building foundational skills in journalism, starting in an entry-level role such as production assistant or associate producer at a local television station. From there, you move into writing and rundown management responsibilities, develop fluency in newsroom software, and work toward taking full ownership of a newscast. Most producers spend several years in smaller markets before advancing to larger stations.
Can you get hired as a newscast producer with little experience?
You can get hired as a newscast producer with limited experience by targeting entry-level associate producer or production assistant roles at small-market stations, which typically have higher turnover and are more willing to develop candidates. A strong writing sample, a basic reel from college or internship work, and demonstrated familiarity with newsroom software carry more weight than years of experience at this stage.
What does the newscast producer interview process look like?
The newscast producer interview process typically begins with a phone screen from HR or a hiring manager, followed by a timed writing test that may include script rewrites, rundown construction, or breaking news exercises. Finalists usually meet with the news director and may be asked to critique a recent broadcast or walk through how they would handle a live breaking story. References from former news directors or executive producers carry significant weight in the final decision.
Where can I find and apply to newscast producer jobs?
