Tips for Your News Videographer Job Search
Cut a reel that shows news judgment
Your demo reel should open with your strongest live news or breaking story footage, not a montage. Hiring managers at stations want to see how you frame a chaotic scene and whether your nat sound choices tell the story without a reporter's narration.
List your camera and NLE proficiencies specifically
Don't just write 'video production' on your resume. Name the cameras you've operated, like Sony PDW or Canon EOS C300, and the editing software you know, such as Avid Media Composer or Adobe Premiere, because assignment editors search for those exact terms.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists news videographer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target market size to match your experience level
Small and mid-size markets post the most entry-level and solo multimedia journalist openings. If you're early in your career, prioritize those listings over large-market postings that require several years of daily news experience.
Prepare a live-shot reference for your interview
Many news videographer interviews include a technical walk-through or a field exercise. Know your live-shot setup workflow cold, including microwave or LiveU unit connection steps, so you can explain or demonstrate it confidently without hesitation.
Negotiate your on-call and overtime structure
Before accepting an offer, clarify how breaking news callouts outside your scheduled shift are compensated. Some stations pay overtime, others offer comp time, and understanding this upfront prevents friction once you're working weekends and holidays.
News Videographer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most news videographers?
The companies hiring the most news videographers right now include Nexstar Media Group, Fox News Network, and Sinclair Broadcast, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Illinois, and Michigan, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Local television station groups and regional cable news networks tend to post the highest volume of openings year-round.
How many news videographer jobs are remote?
About 0% of news videographer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is low compared to most media roles because daily news shooting is inherently field-based. Post-production editing roles and some freelance assignment positions are the sub-areas most likely to allow partial remote schedules.
How do you become a news videographer?
Start by earning a degree in journalism, broadcasting, or film production, where you'll build foundational camera and editing skills. Intern at a local TV station or campus news outlet to accumulate real deadline experience. Build a demo reel with diverse story types, then apply to entry-level shooter-editor or multimedia journalist openings in smaller markets to begin your professional career.
Can you get hired as a news videographer with little or no experience?
Yes, smaller television markets and digital-only news outlets regularly hire candidates with limited professional experience if their reel demonstrates solid fundamentals. Internship footage, college newscast work, and freelance clips all count. Focusing your applications on markets outside major cities and highlighting your ability to self-edit dramatically improves your chances when your professional credits are still limited.
What does the news videographer interview process look like?
Most stations begin with a phone or video screen with a news director or chief photographer, followed by an in-person or remote reel review. Some markets ask you to complete a field or editing exercise to evaluate your speed and news judgment under deadline pressure. Final-round candidates typically meet with senior editorial staff before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to news videographer jobs?
You can find and apply to news videographer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and market preferences, then apply directly to each position that fits.
